The market is too optimistic about how quickly new manufacturing capacity becomes earnings. I expect strong growth, but customer forecasts are not guaranteed sales, and higher interest rates make a premium earnings multiple harder to sustain.
Key points
- $55.8 billion of fiscal 2028 sales would support today's price under my valuation assumptions.
- $50.0 billion is my fiscal 2028 sales forecast, despite continued equipment and services growth.
- $466.93 a share is my twelve-month target, supporting a sell rating.
The call
The market expects too much conversion of capacity into sales. At my valuation multiple, today's price requires fiscal 2028 earnings of $21.70 a share. Holding my operating margin constant, that requires annual sales substantially above my forecast. Investors appear to be treating longer customer forecasts as unusually dependable demand.

I expect strong growth, not a collapse. My fiscal 2027 equipment forecast exceeds the latest quarterly guidance's annual pace, while services continue expanding. But management explicitly says doubled manufacturing capacity is not a revenue forecast. Customer factory readiness still limits deliveries, and hiring costs slow margin improvement.
Valuation
| Driver | Estimate |
|---|
| Fiscal 2027 revenue | $44.6 billion |
| Fiscal 2028 revenue | $50.0 billion |
| Fiscal 2028 operating margin | 35.5% |
| Fiscal 2028 normalized earnings | $19.46 a share |
| October 2027 earnings multiple | 24 times |
| Twelve-month target | $466.93 a share |
Normalized earnings exclude investment-price swings but retain employee share compensation; I assume a fiscal 2028 tax rate of 13%, diluted shares of 800 million and net interest income of $140 million. The multiple rewards technology leadership and recurring services, but discounts customer spending cycles and higher bond yields. Today's price instead requires almost 27 times my earnings forecast, leaving insufficient protection against slower deliveries.
Revenue needed to support the share priceAnalyst FY2028 scenarios: 35.5% operating margin, 13% tax, 800 million shares, 24 times earnings.
Risks
- Faster factory openings could lift sales above my forecast; watch delivery guidance and customer construction schedules.
- Better pricing could expand profits faster; watch gross margins as hiring costs ease.
- Investors could keep paying a premium despite higher rates; watch whether earnings revisions justify that premium.
What would change my mind
I would reconsider if guidance and customer delivery schedules support fiscal 2028 sales above $55 billion while sustaining an operating margin of at least 35.5%.
