The market is about right about next year's cash generation. Better wells and lower debt support the shares, but major new customer contracts contribute later. My twelve-month target is $49.72.
Key points
- $3.38 per million Btu is the 2027 benchmark gas price today's shares require under my valuation.
- $1.87 billion is my 2027 forecast for free cash flow belonging to EQT shareholders.
- $49.72 a share is my twelve-month target, supporting Hold.
The call
The market is about right, not excessively optimistic. At my chosen multiple, today's shares require a 2027 benchmark gas price of $3.38 per million British thermal units, a measure of energy. That is only modestly above my forecast. The three-month recovery deserves respect, although longer-term performance remains weak.
Cash available to shareholders is smaller than reported cash ($ millions)EQT July 21, 2026 release; second-quarter cash-flow reconciliations.
Better operations should offset slow customer starts. Compression equipment improves well output without proportionately higher drilling spending. I forecast modest production growth, not another acquisition-sized jump. The large power contract starts in 2031; the new Asian liquefied-gas agreement starts in 2028. Neither funds next year's shareholder returns.
Valuation
| Driver or valuation step | My estimate |
|---|
| 2027 benchmark gas price | $3.25 per million Btu |
| 2027 gas-equivalent sales volume | 2,450 billion cubic feet |
| 2027 adjusted operating earnings attributable to EQT, before interest, tax and depreciation | $4.95 billion |
| Operating-business multiple | 6.5 times |
| Integrated-platform premium | 0.5 times |
| October 2027 target | $49.72 a share |
The combined seven-times multiple recognizes low costs and pipeline access; the integration story contributes $3.94 a share and would weaken if customer projects stall. Subtracting forecast October 2027 net debt of $3.4 billion and dividing by 629 million diluted shares produces the target, without assumed buybacks. My cash forecast includes growth spending and outside investors' claims, so potential gas-price upside outweighs the case for selling over this small valuation gap.
Gas prices decide the twelve-month share valueOur scenarios, October 14, 2026; same volumes, seven-times multiple and $3.4 billion net debt.
Risks
- A cold winter or faster export demand could lift gas prices; watch sustained benchmark prices above my forecast.
- More compression gains could lower investment needs; watch production rising while maintenance spending falls.
- Weak local pricing or cost inflation could reduce cash; watch regional price discounts and spending per unit.
What would change my mind
Two consecutive quarters of shareholder-attributable free cash flow above a $2.5 billion annualized pace, without working-capital benefits or deferred investment, would warrant a higher forecast.
