Lam should keep growing as complex chips require more processing equipment. But sustaining today's valuation requires stronger growth than my forecast, while cash collections and new laboratory spending limit the support from share repurchases.
Key points
- $42.4 billion of fiscal-2028 sales would support today's price at my chosen earnings multiple.
- 12% growth in fiscal-2028 sales is my forecast after the fiscal-2027 surge.
- 81% of fiscal-2026 profit became operating cash, weakening the case for a richer valuation.
The call
The market is too optimistic about sustained growth. At my fiscal-2028 margin assumption, today's price requires 24% sales growth that year if investors pay 28 times earnings. Alternatively, my earnings forecast requires investors to pay 31 times. Neither outcome is impossible, but both demand continued exceptional execution.
Quarterly sales versus the pace needed to support the price ($ billions)- Reported revenue
- My revenue forecast
SEC results through June 2026; desk forecasts as of Oct. 8, 2026. Reference: FY28 required sales divided by four.
Growth should slow, not collapse. I start fiscal 2027 at September's guided sales and add $300 million quarterly; fiscal 2028 adds $200 million quarterly. More complex chips support demand, but equipment upgrades are not permanent service income. Contracts extending beyond one year are immaterial, leaving little contractual protection against a spending slowdown.
Valuation
| My estimate | Figure |
|---|
| Fiscal-2028 revenue | $38.4 billion |
| Fiscal-2028 operating margin | 41% |
| Fiscal-2028 effective tax rate | 16% |
| Fiscal-2028 diluted earnings | $10.67 a share |
| October-2027 earnings multiple | 28 times |
| Twelve-month target | $298.63 |
Earnings include stock compensation, assume 1.24 billion diluted shares and zero net other income. The multiple rewards technological leadership but respects cyclical orders and elevated bond yields. Initiate Sell: October's report and subsequent spending updates should expose slower growth, while faster capacity additions remain the principal upside risk.
Fiscal 2026 profits versus spendable cash ($ billions)Lam fiscal-2026 10-K, Aug. 7, 2026. Other adjustments combine noncash items and remaining working-capital changes.
Cash quality matters: unpaid customer bills absorbed $2.0 billion in fiscal 2026, while the planned laboratory expansion adds future capital demands. This is working-capital pressure, not evidence of fictitious revenue.
Risks
- Faster memory-capacity additions could defeat my slowdown forecast; watch equipment revenue and customer spending commitments.
- Stronger pricing could lift profit beyond my estimate; watch margins as product mix changes.
- Investors could sustain a higher earnings multiple; watch bond yields and whether cash collections catch up with sales.
What would change my mind
Two reported quarters above $10 billion in sales with operating margins above 42% before October 2027 would overturn my growth and profitability assumptions.
