The market is about right about the recovery. Strong steel demand supports earnings, but competing capacity and an unfinished aluminum rollout limit further gains. My twelve-month target is $257.27.
Key points
- $21.25 a share of 2027 earnings supports today's price at my chosen multiple.
- $250 million of aluminum operating profit in 2027 assumes below-capacity production.
- $257.27 a share is my twelve-month target, supporting Hold.
The call
The market is about right about the recovery. Today's price requires roughly $4.0 billion of 2027 operating profit at my valuation multiple. That does not require aluminum to reach full potential, but it does require steel profitability to stay far above its recent weaker years.
Steel still supplies nearly all operating profit ($ millions)- Q3 FY26 reported
- My FY27E quarterly average
STLD Oct. 19, 2026 release; supplemental segment basis before corporate costs. FY27E is my quarterly average.
Steel, not aluminum, still decides the stock. I forecast stronger finished-product sales and recovering fabrication profits, but allow steel earnings to ease from September's pace. Nucor independently confirms strong demand, yet its new West Virginia mill starts commercial shipments in early 2027. That supply restrains my enthusiasm for another valuation increase.
Valuation
| Driver | My estimate |
|---|
| 2027 steel operating profit | $3.8 billion |
| 2027 aluminum operating profit | $250 million |
| 2027 earnings per diluted share | $22.37 |
| Core earnings multiple | 10 times |
| Domestic manufacturing platform premium | 1.5 times |
| Twelve-month target | $257.27 a share |
My model assumes 13 million external steel tons and 140 million diluted shares in 2027, with aluminum finished shipments below full capacity.
The platform premium is worth $33.56 a share for coated products, recycling integration and domestic supply security; sustained import competition would erase it.
The strong share-price trend argues against selling, but steel-margin sensitivity leaves too little expected upside to buy.
Small steel margin changes move the target sharplyMy Oct. 20, 2026 calculation; change per external net ton versus base case, all else unchanged.
Risks
- Higher rates could stall construction while new mills squeeze prices; watch competing capacity and steel prices relative to scrap costs.
- Aluminum could disappoint again; watch finished shipments and saleable yields, not hot-mill utilization.
- Cash could lag earnings; nine-month receivables rose faster than revenue, so watch collections and inventory before assuming large buybacks.
What would change my mind
I would cut the target if aluminum remains loss-making through June 2027 while quarterly steel operating profit falls below $800 million.
