Discover synergies are ahead of plan while credit improves, leaving earnings power understated. I see 17% upside to $246.75 on 2027 profit.
Key points
- $1.8 billion of yearly cost and debit savings already banked ahead of plan in 2026.
- 3.98% card loss rate in Q3 2026 fell while late payments tracked normal seasonal patterns.
- $2.6 billion of share buybacks in Q3 2026 cut share count with capital at 13.8% in Q3 2026.
The call
Market doubts the Discover purchase will ever pay for its cost and risk. At $210.00 on Oct 20 2026 the shares trade near 9 times my profit view for 2027, which assumes marketing stays heavy and fee losses linger.

Earnings power is already visible through the noise of deal costs. Profit before credit costs hit $7.5 billion in Q3 2026 as card yields rose. Margin of 8.41% in Q3 2026 shows extra savings about match likely fee hits ahead.

Valuation
| Item | Figure |
|---|
| 2027 revenue | $67.9 billion |
| 2027 loan loss cost | $12.8 billion |
| 2027 costs | $36.9 billion |
| 2027 adjusted profit | $23.50 a share |
| Multiple in 12 months | 10.5 times |
| Target in 12 months | $246.75 a share |
Card lenders earning 12% on equity in 2027 merit 10 to 11 times profit in 2027. That multiple matches large card peers with strong credit in 2026. Upside of 17% in 12 months beats downside to 9 times profit in 2027, so I rate it buy.
Risks
- Job losses lift card losses in 2027, which I would see in late payments above 4.0% in early 2027 outside normal seasonality.
- Marketing stays high without loan growth in 2027, which I would see in flat Discover balances through mid 2027.
- Fee losses from the merchant settlement top savings in 2027, which I would see in final court terms in November 2026 and fee disclosures in 2027.
What would change my mind
I would turn cautious if late payments keep rising past seasonal norms in early 2027 while purchase volumes stall.
