The market is about right about earnings durability. Better drilling and repurchases should cushion lower oil prices, but not produce another earnings surge. My twelve-month target is $153.72 a share.
Key points
- $80 a barrel is my sustainable 2027 oil-price assumption, below the recent spike.
- 3% oil growth in 2027 lets efficiency and repurchases cushion lower prices.
- $6.4 billion of forecast 2027 cash after investment supports continuing shareholder returns.
The call
The market is about right. At ten times annual earnings, today's share price requires roughly $78 oil in 2027. That assumes my modest production growth and $11 operating cash cost per barrel equivalent, a unit combining oil and gas. It does not require the latest quarter's exceptional prices to persist.
Higher oil prices supplied most of the added salesQ2 2026 versus Q2 2025, $ millions; EOG June-quarter 10-Q, August 4, 2026.
I expect resilience, not another earnings surge. Recovering Middle East exports should lower oil prices, while depleted inventories support restocking. The government forecasts gas supply growing faster than export demand, so I assume no gas-price boom. The November results and next year's spending plan should reveal whether drilling gains survive cheaper oil.
Valuation
| Driver | My estimate |
|---|
| Sustainable 2027 oil realization | $80 a barrel |
| 2027 total production | 1.45 million barrels equivalent a day |
| 2027 earnings | $15.37 a share |
| Commodity-cycle valuation | 9 times earnings |
| Low-cost franchise premium | 1 times earnings |
| October 2027 target | $153.72 a share |
My model assumes $3 gas per thousand cubic feet, then deducts operating costs, depreciation, interest and taxes. It includes $6.7 billion of 2027 investment and 510 million diluted shares; employee stock awards remain an expense.
The franchise premium is worth about $15 a share and disappears if cost leadership fails. High bond yields argue against a larger multiple; strong relative performance argues against betting on a collapse. Commodity swings dominate the modest base-case upside, making hold the better forecast.
The oil assumption matters more than faster drillingAnalyst 2027 scenarios; gas realization $3/Mcf, NGL prices move with oil; valuation held at 10 times earnings.
Risks
- Export routes reopen faster: watch oil inventories rebuild and realized prices fall.
- Gas stays oversupplied: watch storage and regional discounts despite new export plants.
- Efficiency stalls: watch well costs, receivables and cash taxes absorb operating gains.
What would change my mind
Sustained oil above $90 a barrel alongside disciplined investment would push me toward a buy.
