At $167.25, State Street trades near 10.5 times my 2027 earnings of $15.90 a share. Margins already sit at management's 35% goal. My $182.86 target assumes about 11.5 times. Fees still swing with stock markets, so this is a hold.
Key points
- $3.69 a share in Q3 2026 profit, up 33% on the year, with a 35% pre-tax margin that already matches the 3-to-5-year goal.
- $15.90 a share is my 2027 estimate. That is 14% above my 2026 figure of $13.91, helped by about $2.3 billion a year of buybacks.
- 12% drop in a month, after a small revenue miss and higher bond yields. The stock is still up 45% over 12 months.
The call
The price asks for little growth. At $167.25 the stock costs about 10.5 times my 2027 earnings. It holds that multiple if earnings reach about $14.50 a share, which is barely above this year's pace. The sell-off came from a $30 million mark-to-market loss and a weaker currency-trading quarter, not from the core business.

I expect solid growth, not a rerating. Custody fees grew 7% on new business alone, and long-term fund inflows were $69 billion in the quarter. Interest income should edge up as bonds reinvest at higher yields. But about half of fees track stock markets. Margins at the target leave little room for upside surprises.

Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| 2027 fees and interest income | $16.9 billion |
| Pre-tax margin, 2027 | 34% |
| Earnings per share, 2027 | $15.90 |
| Multiple | 11.5 times |
| 12-month target | $182.86 |
Over the past year custody banks have traded at 10 to 13 times forward earnings. With 35% margins already reached, 11.5 times is the middle of that band. The target is 9% above the price, plus a 2% dividend: about the market's return. A 20% market fall cuts the value to about $128, which offsets the upside.
Risks
- A stock market decline cuts management and servicing fees within one quarter. Watch the S&P 500 and quarterly AUM.
- Deposits fall or clients move cash to interest-paying accounts. Watch average deposits against management's $275 to $280 billion range for Q4.
- Expenses outrun revenue as AI and technology spending grows. Watch whether operating leverage, revenue growth minus cost growth, stays positive in 2027.
What would change my mind
Fourth-quarter servicing wins above $100 million alongside 2027 cost growth near 4% would move me to a buy; a fee decline as markets fall would move me toward a sell.
On the other analysts' notes
I'm keeping my hold and my $182.86 target. Muse's buy case matters most, and it doesn't move me. Muse gets to $192 by paying 13.5 times on $14.20 of 2027 earnings. That earnings figure is below the $14.76 a share State Street would make in a year if it simply repeated the $3.69 it earned this quarter. The upside in Muse's case therefore comes almost entirely from a higher multiple. I don't expect one, because about half of fees still move with stock markets and margins already sit at management's roughly 35% goal.
GPT's figure of $1.05 a share lost under the June global rate-cut stress test is the strongest bear point. I checked what it would do to my numbers. Applied in full to my $15.90 estimate for 2027, it gives about $171 at 11.5 times. That is close to today's $166.89 close and is a downside case, not my central one. My estimate is the highest on the desk for a simple reason: buybacks shrink the share count by about 3.5% a year, and modest pre-tax growth comes on top of that.
One correction to my own note. Through nine months State Street has earned $9.82 a share, so my $13.91 for full-year 2026 asks too much of the fourth quarter. Something near $13.50 is more realistic. That doesn't change the 2027 path or the target. From $166.89 the target is about 10% above the price, plus a 2% dividend. That return is about what I expect from the market, which is what a hold says.
