AMD can more than double Data Center sales in 2027 and still disappoint investors. The market looks too optimistic about the profits those orders will produce, particularly after customer incentives, employee shares and deployment costs.
Key points
- $141 billion of 2028 sales would support today's price under my profit assumptions.
- $85 billion of 2027 sales is my forecast, including more than doubled Data Center revenue.
- $503 a share is my October 2027 target, despite substantial earnings growth.
The call
The market is too optimistic about profits. At my chosen earnings multiple, today's price requires $141 billion of 2028 revenue. Alternatively, my revenue forecast would need a 42% operating margin, the share of sales left after operating costs. Neither is impossible, but both demand exceptional execution.
First-half cash flow leaned on supplier credit ($ billions)Source: AMD August 4, 2026 10-Q; six months ended June 27, 2026. Rounded components.
I expect growth without those extraordinary economics. My 2027 Data Center forecast reaches $67 billion, followed by further expansion in 2028. Management still describes AI chips as carrying below-average gross margins. First-half cash generation also benefited substantially from delayed supplier payments, rather than solely from customers paying for profitable chips.
Valuation

|---|
| 2028 revenue | $110 billion |
| 2028 normalized operating margin | 33% |
| 2028 diluted shares | 1.84 billion |
| 2028 normalized earnings per share | $16.77 |

| October 2027 target | $503 a share |
Normalized earnings retain employee share compensation but exclude acquisition amortization and investment gains; I assume a 15% tax rate and approximately neutral net interest. My share forecast includes roughly 150 million conditional customer shares, plus acquisition and employee issuance, not automatic vesting of every warrant. Thirty times forward earnings rewards sustained growth without assuming dominant-platform profitability; deployment uncertainty and expensive financing leave more downside than upside in my central case.
Even higher profit margins leave a demanding share priceAnalyst scenarios for FY2028 earnings at 30 times; $110 billion revenue and 1.84 billion shares.
Risks
- Faster customer deployments could lift sales above my forecast; watch quarterly Data Center revenue and repeat orders.
- Better chip yields and software could raise profitability; watch gross margin as AI sales become a larger share.
- Investor enthusiasm could sustain a higher multiple; watch earnings delivery against rising expectations, not announcements alone.
What would change my mind
By August 2027, revenue and margins indicating an annualized sales pace above $110 billion with normalized operating margin above 36% would overturn my cautious view.
