Dell is executing on AI, but $581 pays 22.8 times guided earnings with no room for slippage. I initiate at sell with a $497 target.
Key points
- $581.10 pays 22.8 times the $25.50 FY27 non-GAAP EPS guide for 69% revenue growth.
- $95 billion AI backlog must convert on schedule despite DRAM as the stated top constraint.
- 43% jump in financing receivables with lower-grade balances up 144% funds growth with credit risk.
The call
Dell at $581 needs perfection stretched into next year. The price is about 22 times this year's guided non-GAAP earnings and over 22 times my $26.14 FY28 estimate. That leaves no room for backlog slippage, margin fade, or memory cost pressure.
Quarterly revenue jumps then must keep climbing ($ billions)SEC XBRL revenue to Q2 FY27, Q3-Q4 from Sep 1 2026 guide. As of Oct 8 2026.
I see a great AI quarter that the market now treats as a new run rate. My work says much non-AI growth is price increases on flat units, Q2 margins benefited from mix that management said may not repeat, and cash is tied up in receivables and leases. Growth slows and the multiple compresses.
Valuation
| Item | Figure |
|---|
| FY28E revenue | $212 billion |
| FY28E non-GAAP net income | $16.6 billion |
| FY28E non-GAAP EPS | $26.14 a share |
| Target multiple | 19 times |
| 12-month target | $497 a share |
A hardware integrator with concentrated AI customers, negative book equity, and financing risk deserves below a premium tech multiple. At 19 times my FY28 EPS the target is 14% below the price, so the rating is sell with downside to $444 if EPS is $24 and upside to $549 at 21 times.
Target hinges on EPS and multiple ($ per share)My estimates from FY27 $25.50 guide. As of Oct 8 2026.
Risks
- AI backlog converts faster with richer configurations and storage attach, lifting EPS above $28.
- Memory supply eases and Dell passes through costs, protecting the 20.9% Q2 gross margin.
- PC refresh broadens beyond large enterprises and traditional servers hold price-led growth.
What would change my mind
Proof that AI orders convert to cash at stable margins without growing lower-grade financing exposure would turn me more positive.
