ICICI Bank grew clean loans 24% with 20% profit growth and pristine asset quality. At 17 times March 2027 profit, temporary margin dilution hides 15% compounding to a $37.59 target.
Key points
- Rs14,843 crore September 2026 profit, up 20.1% from a year ago, with fee income up 20.1% and costs up only 8.5%.
- 24.1% clean loan growth excluding special foreign deposits, led by 33.8% business banking and 30.6% domestic corporate loans.
- 0.30% net bad loans in September 2026 with 75.0% loss coverage, plus Rs13,100 crore of extra rainy day reserves.
The call
The price assumes fast growth is borrowed and lending spreads stay weak. At $29.48 on October 19 2026, the shares trade at 17.1 times my March 2027 profit estimate. That is a price for a bank past its peak.

I see a compounder buying future loans cheaply. The 4.18% September 2026 spread was dragged down by low return foreign loans, while core domestic spread held at 4.32% that quarter. As $18 billion of fixed cost deposits shift home, profit can compound 15% a year.

Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| FY27 profit estimate to March 2027 | Rs59,172 crore |
| FY28 profit estimate, up 15% | Rs68,047 crore or $1.98 per ADS |
| Target multiple | 19 times FY28 profit |
| Twelve-month target | $37.59 per ADS |
| Current book value | $10.40 per ADS, or 2.8 times book |
Nineteen times fits a top private bank earning 2.26% on assets in the September 2026 quarter. Upside is 27.5% over twelve months plus a 0.85% dividend yield for the last twelve months. Strong capital and excess reserves cushion the wait if growth slows.
Risks
- Foreign deposits leave or hedge costs jump, keeping spreads weak, visible in monthly deposit and margin data.
- Corporate and small business loans sour after rapid growth, visible in new bad loans and credit costs above 0.50% annualized.
- Indian rules tighten on farm loans or loan loss reserves from April 2027, visible in extra provisions and capital ratios.
What would change my mind
Clean loan growth slipping below 15% with domestic spreads under 4.00% would break the compounding case.
