I withdraw my sell and move to Hold. Stronger sales guidance and clarification of overseas factory costs support higher earnings, but my $468.16 twelve-month target leaves insufficient upside for a buy.
Key points
- $230 billion of 2027 sales is my revised forecast, supported by additional manufacturing capacity.
- 57% operating margin in 2027 allows for expensive new factories and production ramps.
- $468.16 per ADS, the US-listed share, is my twelve-month target.
The call
The market is about right after the retreat. At 22 times annual earnings, the verified price requires approximately $208 billion of 2027 sales under my profitability assumptions. My previous target has been reached; stronger guidance also weakens the case for further downside.
Computing dominates third-quarter 2026 salesSource: TSMC October 15, 2026 earnings call; shares of consolidated revenue, not profits.
I expect capacity shortages to support growth longer than my earlier forecast allowed. ASML independently reports customers preparing for shortages through 2028. TSMC clarified that its largest overseas margin penalty comes later, not automatically next year. Longer-term stock outperformance and rising earnings estimates argue against extending the sell.
Valuation
| Driver | My estimate |
|---|
| 2027 revenue | $230 billion |
| 2027 operating margin | 57% |
| 2027 earnings per ADS | $21.28 |
| Base earnings multiple in October 2027 | 20 times |
| AI manufacturing scarcity premium | 2 times |
| Twelve-month target per ADS | $468.16 |
Earnings assume an 18% tax rate and $3.5 billion of recurring nonoperating income in 2027, excluding exceptional investment gains. The scarcity premium rewards hard-to-replace manufacturing capacity; it disappears if customers secure credible alternatives. High bond yields restrain the combined multiple, while the scenario chart shows why modest expected upside warrants Hold rather than Buy.

Analyst scenarios, October 15, 2026: 2027 sales $230bn; cells are dollars per ADS, not probability-weighted targets.
Risks
- AI construction or power delays could interrupt orders; watch monthly sales and customer capacity commitments rather than announced spending alone.
- Factory costs could overwhelm productivity gains; watch operating margins and cash remaining after equipment spending, which covered only 62% of third-quarter 2026 profit.
- Taiwan disruption, tighter export restrictions or a stronger Taiwan dollar could hurt earnings; watch shipping continuity, regulatory notices and exchange-rate assumptions.
What would change my mind
I would turn positive if 2027 sales were tracking above $245 billion while operating margins remained at least 57%.
