Meta's aggressive AI infrastructure spending is absorbing virtually all operating cash flow, turning free cash flow negative and depressing operating margins. We initiate coverage with a Sell rating and a 12-month price target of $640.00.
Key points
- $137.5 billion midpoint capex guidance for 2026 absorbs virtually all operating cash flow, evaporating free cash flow and halting share buybacks.
- 30.9% operating margin in the second quarter marked an 1,180 basis point drop year over year as infrastructure and headcount costs escalated.
- $347 billion in combined uncommenced data center leases locks Meta into heavy depreciation and fixed lease costs through 2028.
The call
The current stock price of $721.08 requires sustained 25% revenue growth alongside operating margins returning toward 40% and free cash flow recovery. It prices Meta as an unencumbered software business trading at 24 times forward earnings.

Instead, Meta has transformed into an intensely capital-heavy utility. With capex guided to $130 billion to $145 billion in 2026, operating cash flow cannot cover capital spending and lease commitments. As depreciation from this infrastructure surge hits the income statement over 2027, operating margins will remain pressured near 31%. Share buybacks were zero in the first half of 2026, causing share dilution to resume. At 21.6 times our 2027 EPS estimate of $29.61, the stock belongs at $640.00.
Valuation
| Valuation metric | 2027 estimate |
|---|
| Projected revenue | $288.8 billion |
| Operating margin | 31.4% |
| Projected net income | $75.8 billion |
| Diluted shares outstanding | 2.56 billion |
| Diluted earnings per share | $29.61 |
| Target price-to-earnings multiple | 21.6 times |
| 12-month price target | $640.00 |
A 21.6 times forward earnings multiple reflects the structural conversion of cash flow into hardware and depreciation. That multiple is lower than software peers because equity holders face near-zero free cash flow and unhedged legal liabilities. The asymmetry is tilted downward, supporting a Sell rating.
Risks
- AI advertising monetization outpaces expectations: Advertising conversion gains from generative models could reaccelerate revenue growth well past 25%, monitored through quarterly ad pricing and impression growth.
- Infrastructure capital discipline: Management could sharply rein in 2027 capex, visible through lower full-year spending outlooks on upcoming earnings calls.
- Adverse litigation settlements: Looming New Mexico penalties of up to $40 billion could force debt financing, tracked via court filings.
What would change my mind
A structural plateau in infrastructure spending that brings full-year capex below 35% of revenue and restores double-digit free cash flow yields would invalidate my thesis.
