The market is too pessimistic about earnings durability. Growing management fees and client financing should offset slower trading and dealmaking, supporting a $1,036.36 twelve-month target. Limited capital headroom keeps this a buy rather than a stronger call.
Key points
- $76.77 a share is my 2027 earnings estimate, without another trading surge.
- $16 billion in estimated 2027 management fees provides a growing earnings cushion.
- 1 percentage point of September capital headroom limits aggressive expansion.
The call
The market expects too much earnings erosion. At my valuation of 13.5 times earnings, today's price requires $66.15 a share. That is below the latest quarter's annual earnings pace, even before removing accelerated charitable giving. The stock's sharp three-month underperformance warrants caution, but does not establish a business contraction.
Fees and financing grew beyond trading ($ billions)Source: Goldman Sachs Q3 earnings release, October 13, 2026; quarterly net revenues.
I expect recurring revenue to withstand slower activity. My 2027 forecast includes $19 billion of financing revenue, with banking fees essentially flat and softer trading than the recent pace. Management fees should benefit from sustained inflows. JPMorgan's strong equity revenues independently support client demand, although neither firm's financing income is immune to falling markets.
Valuation
| Driver | My estimate |
|---|
| 2027 net revenue | $78.1 billion |
| 2027 expenses as a share of revenue | 60.5% |
| 2027 diluted earnings | $76.77 a share |
| Core earnings multiple | 12.5 times |
| Leading franchise and recurring-fee premium | 1 time |
| October 2027 target | $1,036.36 a share |
Earnings assume $1.7 billion of credit provisions, a 20% tax rate, $750 million of preferred dividends and 294 million diluted shares in 2027. The modest premium rewards distribution strength and financing relationships, not an assumed regulatory windfall; sustained client withdrawals would end it. The upside supports a buy, but the weak-activity case shows why this is not a strong buy.
A weaker financing cycle can erase the upsideAnalyst scenarios for October 2027; earnings and multiples both change, not probability-weighted targets.
Risks
- Higher rates could delay deals and reduce borrowing demand; watch backlog and financing balances after September's Federal Reserve increase.
- Capital could constrain growth and repurchases; watch whether the regulatory capital cushion falls below management's minimum half-percentage-point buffer.
- Higher pay or loan losses could absorb fee growth; watch compensation accruals, impaired loans and credit provisions rather than treating bank operating cash flow as ordinary corporate cash generation.
What would change my mind
Two consecutive quarters of falling financing revenue and management fees, despite stable markets, would overturn my durability thesis.
