The market is too optimistic about how much stronger banking income reaches shareholders. Wealth growth and cost savings support earnings, but lending consumes capital and some recent deposits are temporary. My twelve-month target is $84.53.
Key points
- $9.88 per ADS in annual earnings would justify today's price at my multiple.
- $8.90 per ADS is my 2027 earnings estimate, despite continued revenue growth.
- 14.1% capital ratio at June 2026 leaves limited room for aggressive buybacks.
The call
The market expects too much earnings strength to last. At my valuation multiple, today's price requires approximately $83 billion of annual revenue if other assumptions hold. That exceeds the first-half 2026 annualised pace by approximately 10%. An ADS, the US-listed share, represents five ordinary shares.
Higher income beats costs, but credit losses also rise ($ billions)Source: HSBC interim results, August 4, 2026; reported figures, including notable items.
I expect growth, not another earnings surge. Wealth inflows and interest-rate hedges support income, but temporary corporate deposits flatter momentum. Lending growth absorbs capital before buybacks receive anything. October's results and the next annual outlook should reveal whether income growth survives deposit departures and lower rates.
Valuation
| My 2027 estimate or valuation input | Figure |
|---|
| Revenue | $78.5 billion |
| Operating expenses | $35.3 billion |
| Credit losses | $4.7 billion |
| Earnings per ADS | $8.90 |
| Forward earnings multiple | 9.5 times |
| October 2027 target per ADS | $84.53 |
Revenue combines $46.5 billion of banking interest income with $32 billion of remaining revenue, including accounting adjustments. Earnings incorporate $3.1 billion from associates, a 23% tax rate, $1.6 billion for other equity holders and 17.1 billion diluted ordinary shares. The target uses unrounded earnings.
A 9.5-times multiple recognises approximately 18% returns on tangible equity, shareholders' capital excluding intangible assets, while allowing for rate and property risk. Illustrative upside is $110 per ADS; downside is $67.50 per ADS. The central forecast supports a sell, not a claim that the business is deteriorating.
More revenue is needed to justify today's share priceAnalyst 2027 revenue scenarios, October 8, 2026; costs held constant, 9.5 times ADS earnings.
Risks
- Wealth momentum could exceed my forecast; watch recurring fees rather than transaction-driven sales.
- Hedge reinvestment could offset falling rates; watch banking interest income alongside durable deposits.
- Capital could rebuild faster; watch the capital ratio and buybacks after funding loan growth.
What would change my mind
Sustained annualised earnings above $9.90 per ADS, without higher credit losses or declining capital, would overturn my view.
