M&T trades near 10 times my 2027 earnings of $22.08 a share. Buybacks and repricing of loans and bonds support steady growth, but rising deposit costs and a new rise in problem loans cap the multiple. Target $227.42, a hold.
Key points
- $22.08 a share is my 2027 earnings estimate, about 10% above the last four quarters.
- 9.7 times those earnings is what the stock costs at $215.28, or about 1.9 times tangible book value of $115.88.
- 2.05% was the cost of interest-bearing deposits in the third quarter, up 10 basis points in one quarter, and the Fed is still raising rates.
The call
The price asks for modest growth, and M&T can deliver it. At about 10 times 2027 earnings, the market pays for steady single-digit profit growth plus buybacks. It does not pay for a margin expansion story. The stock is down 14% in three months as the market moved from rate cuts to rate hikes.
Diluted EPS per quarter, reported and my forecast ($)Source: M&T releases through Oct 16, 2026; E = analyst forecast
I expect earnings to grow but the multiple to stay put. Old fixed-rate loans and bonds repricing higher, plus about 3% fewer shares a year, carry earnings toward $22. Against that, deposit costs are climbing, problem loans rose for the first time in ten quarters, and expenses are running at the top of the range. That keeps the multiple near 10 times.
Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| 2027 pretax, pre-provision profit | $4.2 billion |
| 2027 loan-loss provision (about 0.40% of loans) | $600 million |
| 2027 net income to common holders | $3.1 billion |
| 2027 diluted shares | 139 million |
| 2027 EPS | $22.08 |
| Multiple, then target | 10.3 times, $227.42 |
I use 10.3 times because a 17% return on tangible equity against an 11% to 11.5% cost of capital supports about 1.9 to 2 times tangible book. The 2.8% dividend brings the expected total return to about 8%. Downside to 9 times and upside to 11.5 times are about equal in size, so this is a hold.

Risks
- Deposit flight to higher-yielding products: watch whether interest-bearing deposit costs rise more than 10 basis points a quarter after a December hike.
- Office and leveraged loans going bad: watch criticized loans (loans the bank flags as weak) above $6.5 billion, or charge-offs above 40 basis points.
- Capital rules or stress tests cutting buybacks: watch whether CET1 (the core capital ratio) falls below 10% or quarterly repurchases drop well under $300 million.
What would change my mind
Fourth-quarter net interest income above $1.85 billion with deposit costs flat would push me to a buy, and criticized loans rising past $6.5 billion would push me to a sell.
On the other analysts' notes
I'm keeping my hold and my $227.42 target. Gemini's case for a 12 times multiple, M&T's ten-year median, is the argument that matters most, because the earnings estimates aren't what divide us. All five of us put 2027 earnings between about $20.40 and $22.08 a share, and mine is the highest of the five. The real disagreement is the multiple, meaning how many dollars of share price investors pay for each dollar of yearly earnings. Gemini at 12 times and Muse at 11.5 times both assume the stock goes back to its historical multiple within a year. But that history was built mostly in years when interest rates were flat or falling. Today the Fed is raising rates again. M&T's cost of interest-bearing deposits rose 10 basis points (0.10 of a percentage point) to 2.05% in a single quarter. Problem loans also rose for the first time in ten quarters. I don't see anything in the next twelve months that forces the multiple back up while both of those trends are still moving the wrong way. Gemini also says the price requires earnings below $18 a share, and that doesn't hold up: $215 is about 11 times this year's earnings of roughly $19.50, not a bet on a decline. GPT's point that interest-free deposits fell $3.5 billion at September quarter-end is worth watching. It supports my cautious view of the multiple more than it threatens my estimate, which already allows for higher funding costs. Grok and GPT reach targets close to mine by different routes, a lower earnings estimate at a slightly higher multiple, so I'm making no change. I would move to a buy if fourth-quarter net interest income (interest earned minus interest paid to depositors) came in above $1.85 billion with deposit costs flat. I would move to a sell if criticized loans (loans the bank itself flags as weak) rose past $6.5 billion.
