Ericsson beat on margins and sales, but part of the quarter came from customers buying early to get ahead of price rises, and higher chip costs hit renewing contracts in 2027. At about 8.5 times 2027 operating profit plus net cash, I see $11.03: a hold.
Key points
- +11.8%: the jump on October 15, after third-quarter sales rose 7% organically and network margins topped guidance.
- SEK 61 billion: net cash, about a sixth of the market value. That cash pays for buybacks and a 2.9% yield.
- 2027: the new CEO's own word for it is a "transition" year, as AI-driven chip costs flow into renewing contracts.
The call
The price assumes 2027 profit holds near this year's level. At $10.71, the operating business trades near 8.5 times my 2027 adjusted operating profit (EBITA, profit before deal-related amortization). That works if margins stay near 14.5% on flat sales. This year's pace runs closer to 15.5%.
Quarterly sales and reported operating income (SEK billions)- Sales
- Sales, my estimate
- Operating income (EBIT)
Ericsson reports to Q3 2026; Q4 2026E mine. Q3 2025 EBIT has 7.6bn one-off gain
I think the market has it about right, which makes this a hold. Third-quarter growth was helped by customers buying ahead of price rises and by back-paid patent fees. Neither repeats. Chip costs reach contracts as they renew, and Ericsson has no automatic pass-through. Buybacks and Enterprise losses shrinking offset part of that, not all.

Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| 2027 sales, flat radio market | SEK 232 billion |
| 2027 adjusted EBITA margin | 14.5% |
| Multiple on EBITA | 8.5 times |
| Net cash, end 2027 | SEK 64 billion |
| Value per ADS at SEK 9.97 per dollar | $11.03 |
Eight and a half times fits a supplier in a market that is not growing, with a margin squeeze ahead. Each point of margin moves the value about 60 cents per share. That makes the upside and downside about even, so the target sits 3% above the price.
Risks
- Price increases stick faster than costs rise. You would see it if the network gross margin holds above 49% in early 2027 reports.
- Early buying leaves a hole in early 2027 orders. Watch whether first-quarter Networks sales fall more than the usual seasonal drop.
- US criminal and anti-terrorism cases, or China's licensing probe, end with a large penalty. Watch the legal notes in each quarterly report.
What would change my mind
A network gross margin at 50% or higher through mid-2027, with sales still growing, would lift my view to a buy.
On the other analysts' notes
I hold at $11.03, a hold. GPT's point mattered most: he takes lease and pension debts out of the cash pile, and I had not. If I take them out in full, my value falls to about $10.40, about 3% below the price. That is still a hold, and a full deduction overstates both. Lease costs already come out of the operating profit I value, and Ericsson says its pension debt would be about SEK 6.6 billion, not 14 billion, using Swedish mortgage-bond rates. Gemini and Muse forecast 2027 about the way I do: flat sales and a 13% to 14.5% margin. Their sells come from putting 15 to 16 times earnings on the whole company and ignoring net cash worth about a sixth of the market value. Valued as the business plus its cash, their own numbers land near today's price, not 12% to 21% below it. Grok's $10.80 is my view measured a different way. What would move me is the margin: Networks gross margin holding at 50% into mid-2027.
