The market is too pessimistic about earnings after integration. Completed systems conversion and remaining expense savings support my $57.19 twelve-month target, without requiring share repurchases or another leap in profitability.
Key points
- $4.97 a share is my 2027 earnings forecast, without share repurchases.
- $850 million annually of promised merger savings should reach full pace this quarter.
- 40 basis points of additional deposit costs could erase my forecast upside.
The call
The market is too pessimistic about earnings after integration. At 11.5 times earnings, today's price requires about $4.40 a share. Holding my other assumptions constant, that means $9.0 billion of annual interest income after funding costs, with a 3.2% interest margin.
Merger charges explain most of the earnings adjustmentQ3 2026 common income, $ millions; Fifth Third release, October 19, 2026.
I expect savings to outweigh funding pressure. My 2027 forecast puts that income at $9.7 billion, supported by modest loan growth and older assets renewing at higher yields. January's spending plan should reveal the savings. Recent underperformance warrants caution, but the completed conversion gives this recovery a measurable deadline.

Earnings use a 22.5% tax rate and 917 million diluted shares, retaining acquisition-accounting income and intangible-asset charges.
The multiple recognizes durable deposits, not a new growth premium.
A weaker-growth, higher-loss case yields roughly $39 a share, making this a Buy rather than a Strong Buy.
Higher deposit costs could erase the upsideAnalyst scenarios: extra annual cost on $171.4bn of Q3 core deposits paying interest; October 19, 2026.
Risks
- Deposit competition consumes savings: watch funding costs and deposits excluding conversion transfers; Regions' deposits fell last quarter, and the chart assumes extra costs without offsetting asset income.
- Reinvestment absorbs the merger benefit: my expenses already rise about 4% over the fourth-quarter annual pace; watch January's budget.
- Higher rates damage borrowers and capital: watch annualized loan losses above 0.5% and further securities losses delaying repurchases.
What would change my mind
I would withdraw the Buy if first-half 2027 earnings, excluding disclosed integration charges, run below $4.40 a share annually despite completed savings.
