3M earns more per sale as factories improve and orders grow 7 percent. I see $10.10 of 2027 profit worth 19 times, or $191.90, about 12 percent above $171.12. I rate it buy.
Key points
- $2.50 a share of adjusted profit in Q3, up 12 percent, on 3.3 percent organic growth and 26.2 percent margin.
- $700 million of data center sales this year, with optical links near $40 million and set to double next year.
- $4.8 billion of adjusted free cash flow guided for 2026, against $7.5 billion of recorded PFAS cleanup bills.
The call
The market is about right on the turnaround but light on what comes next. At $171.12 the stock pays 18.8 times this year profit. That profit is $9.13 a share on company guidance. That math needs sales growth near 4 percent with margins near 25 percent.
Revenue growing again after two flat yearsSEC XBRL facts to Q3 FY26; Q4 FY26E is mine.
I believe growth and profit beat that bar. Orders rose about 7 percent with backlog (work waiting to ship) up about 18 percent. Safety sales grew 7 percent with margins above 30 percent. Data centers add scale while factory closings cut cost.

Valuation
| What I expect | Figure |
|---|
| 2027 sales | $26.7 billion |
| 2027 operating profit at 25.5% margin | $6.80 billion |
| 2027 adjusted profit | $10.10 a share |
| Fair multiple | 19 times |
| 12 month target | $191.90 a share |
Peers with steady industrial growth trade near 19 to 23 times profit. I use 19 times for lawsuit risk and uneven auto and electronics demand. Most of the upside comes from profit growth, so a miss on growth hurts more than a small shift in the multiple.
Risks
- Electronics and auto stay weak and drag the half of sales outside Safety, seen in mid teens display declines and soft car builds.
- Cash for lawsuits and cleanup tops plan and cuts buybacks, seen in quarterly special payments near $894 million after tax.
- Amazon optical orders ramp slowly with no minimum purchase, seen in ferrule output and quarterly EBO sales.
What would change my mind
I would turn cautious if orders stall and new product sales stop growing while margins flatten despite factory savings.
