Chevron posted a record quarter on high oil and refining profits that will be hard to repeat. At $205.30 the shares leave little room for normalizing cash flow.
Key points
- $18.1 billion in Q2 FY26 of free cash flow, or cash left after building costs, towers over prior quarters.
- $1.5 billion in Q2 FY26 of timing gains, or paper profits booked before oil delivery, flattered earnings.
- $3.7 billion in late 2026 of midstream debt, or pipeline business borrowings, leaves the balance sheet at deal close.
The call
The market looks about right for now. The $205.30 price in October 2026 needs peak earnings to justify it. That means about $15.80 of profit per share in 2027.
Quarterly free cash flow shows a one off spike ($ billions)- Free cash flow
- My forecast
SEC XBRL company facts to Q2 FY26; forecasts are author's. As of Oct 8 2026.
I see slower cash ahead instead. I expect $14.60 of profit per share in 2027 as refining cools. My $15.90 of cash per share in 2027 still funds payouts.
Valuation
| Driver | Estimate |
|---|
| Net income in 2027 | $28.5 billion in 2027 |
| Shares in 2027 | 1.95 billion shares in 2027 |
| Profit per share in 2027 | $14.60 a share in 2027 |
| Multiple in 2027 | 14.5 times 2027 earnings |
| Target in 12 months | $212.00 in 12 months |
| A multiple means price divided by profit, and 14.5 times fits a major oil firm in a normal year. A yield means cash per share divided by price, and my cash supports a 7.5% yield in 2027. The 3.3% gain in 12 months to $212.00 supports a hold. | |
Risks
- Oil falls below $80.00 a barrel in 2027 and earnings miss, which I would see in Brent averages weakening by March 2027.
- Refining profit falls from $4.87 billion in Q2 FY26 toward $1.00 billion a quarter in 2027, which I would see in Gulf Coast margins narrowing by December 2026.
- Output stalls below 4.00 million barrels daily in 2027, which I would see in quarterly production missing growth by March 2027.
What would change my mind
I would turn positive if quarterly free cash flow, or cash left after building costs, holds above $7.00 billion a quarter through June 2027 without timing help.
