The market is about right about next year's earnings. Higher investment income and share repurchases should cushion weaker insurance pricing, but my $418.29 twelve-month target leaves insufficient upside for a buy.
Key points
- $33.46 a share is my 2027 core earnings estimate, excluding realized investment gains and losses.
- $3.98 billion of estimated 2027 after-tax investment income cushions softer insurance margins.
- $418.29 a share is my twelve-month target; the upside supports Hold, not Buy.
The call
The market requires durable profits, not another exceptional year. At my valuation multiple, today's price requires 2027 earnings of $31.16 a share. With my other assumptions, that permits claims and expenses to consume 92.3% of premiums, versus the latest quarter's reported 86.8%.
Personal insurance carries the strongest underlying margins- Q3 2025 underlying ratio
- Q3 2026 underlying ratio
Travelers Q3 release, October 16, 2026. Claims and expenses per $100 of premiums; lower is better.
I expect that durability, with less help from old claims estimates. Higher bond yields support earnings as insurance pricing slows. Progressive's growing auto customer base argues against forecasting a quick Travelers volume rebound. The stock's twelve-month market outperformance is evidence against betting on an abrupt reversal.
Valuation
| My valuation input | Estimate |
|---|
| 2027 earned premiums | $45 billion |
| 2027 claims and expenses as a share of premiums | 91% |
| 2027 core earnings per diluted share | $33.46 |
| Multiple on 2027 core earnings | 12.5 times |
| Agency-franchise premium within that multiple | $33.46 a share |
| Twelve-month target | $418.29 a share |
My cost ratio assumes 85% before catastrophes and revisions to old claims estimates, plus seven percentage points for catastrophes, less one point of favorable revisions. I interpolate management's quarterly bond-income outlook, add $300 million of other investment income, deduct $420 million of corporate costs, and assume 202 million diluted shares and a 21% underwriting tax rate. The multiple includes one turn for the agency franchise and risk-selection capabilities; repeated reserve surprises would remove it, while better margins offer meaningful upside without requiring faster growth.
One point of insurance costs changes value by $22 a shareAnalyst scenarios, October 16, 2026. 2027 earnings at 12.5 times; other assumptions unchanged.
Risks
- Competition could shrink the customer base further; watch domestic auto policies and new-business premiums.
- Lawsuit costs could exceed reserves; watch liability claims and additional asbestos charges.
- Strong margins could last longer than I expect; watch underlying insurance costs and continued repurchases.
What would change my mind
Two consecutive quarters with underlying insurance costs below 84% of premiums and organic premium growth above 4% would make my earnings forecast too conservative.
