Signed $4B Brazil and Mexico sale funds the pivot, but Japan restart decides 2027. I see 8.5% upside to $125.12 plus a 4.9% yield, so I rate it hold.
Key points
- $4.025 billion cash sale of Brazil and Mexico signed October 20, worth about 10% of market value, closing in late 2027.
- $140 million pretax hit in Q3 from the Japan sales halt, on top of a $105 million hit in Q2.
- $1.47 trillion of PGIM assets at September 30 with fee growth offset by active equity outflows.
The call
The price still assumes Japan stays impaired. At $115.27 the stock pays about 8.1 times my $14.30 of 2027 operating earnings per share, which is profit without investment swings. The signed disposal adds option value but no 2027 earnings help.

I see a funded wait rather than a broken franchise. Japan in force policies still earn fees while new sales pause, and US retirement plus PGIM offset part of the drag. With a January restart scheduled, earnings rebuild toward a normal run rate.

Valuation
| Item | Figure |
|---|
| 2027 operating earnings per share | $14.30 |
| Multiple, on depressed earnings | 8.75 times |
| Target value in 12 months | $125.12 |
| Dividend in next 12 months | $5.60 |
| Total return with dividend | 13.4% |
A life insurer earning mid teens returns on equity, which is profit on shareholder funds, should hold 8 to 10 times earnings. I pay 8.75 times depressed earnings. Price upside of 8.5% plus a 4.9% yield keeps a hold.
Risks
- Restart slips past January if reforms lag, which you would see in regulator notices and monthly Japan sales.
- US group claims worsen on mortality or disability, which you would see in the benefits ratio, or claims divided by premiums, rising above 81%.
- Private credit losses cut PGIM fees and spreads, which you would see in outflows and weaker investment income.
What would change my mind
A firm restart date with clean sales trends or firm net proceeds earmarked for buybacks would raise the target.
