GM earned record sales with strong truck margins and authorized a huge buyback. I see 28% upside as 2027 trucks and cost cuts offset inflation.
Key points
- $4.1 billion of adjusted operating profit in Q3 2026, up 22% from last year, put GM back at 8.7% North America margin.
- $20 billion of new buyback power equals 31% of market value at $77.12 a share and follows a 30% share cut since 2023.
- $5.9 billion of adjusted auto cash flow in Q3 2026 funds trucks, software and payouts despite $2 billion of 2026 cost pressure.
The call
The market expects cost pressure to erase growth. At $77.12 a share today, the stock sells for 5.8 times profit. That price implies profit falls toward $9.4 billion in 2027 with no growth after.
Revenue held near record despite EV reset ($ billions)SEC XBRL facts plus Q3 release, Oct 20 2026. E is my forecast.
I see cash and trucks proving that view too gloomy. I forecast $12.0 billion of 2027 adjusted net income. That equals $15.19 a share on 790 million shares. New trucks lift price and mix while lower warranty bills and software growth offset $2 billion of cost pressure.
Valuation
| Driver | Estimate |
|---|
| 2027 adjusted net income | $12.0 billion |
| Average diluted shares | 790 million |
| 2027 adjusted profit | $15.19 a share |
| Target multiple | 6.5 times |
| 12-month target | $98.73 a share |
| Cyclical makers often sell for 6 to 8 times mid-cycle profit, which means earnings from selling cars (a low multiple business). I use 6.5 times for tariff and cycle risk. At that level the target offers 28% upside plus a 0.9% dividend yield, so the reward outweighs a flat year. | |
Buybacks cut shares by nearly 30 percent (millions)SEC filings and Q3 release, Oct 20 2026. E is my forecast.
Risks
- Commodity and memory costs stay high into 2027, cutting EBIT by $1 billion to $2 billion. Watch copper, steel and DRAM spot prices and GM monthly cost updates.
- New Silverado and Sierra launch slips or needs discounts, hurting mix. Watch dealer inventory days and incentive spending through mid 2027.
- Truck demand weakens as loan rates bite and fleet mix rises. Watch US sales pace near 16 million units and GM Financial loan losses.
What would change my mind
A sustained drop in truck pricing or a cut to 2026 cash flow guidance would show the cost squeeze is structural.
