At $80.82, Wells Fargo trades near 10 times my 2027 earnings of $8.10 a share. Earnings are still growing. But rising bond yields pushed its core capital ratio down to the 10% floor, which slows buybacks. My target is $85.05, a hold.
Key points
- $8.10 a share: my 2027 earnings estimate, up about 10% on my 2026 estimate of $7.38.
- 10.0%: core capital ratio (CET1, the bank's loss-absorbing cushion against its risk-weighted assets) at September 30. That is the floor of management's 10% to 10.5% range.
- 1.8 times: the price against tangible book value of $44.46 a share.
The call
The price asks for steady growth, not a breakout. At 10.5 times earnings, $80.82 needs about $7.70 a share of earnings a year. That is roughly $1.93 a quarter, and the last two quarters came in at $2.00 and $1.87. In other words, the market is paying for a return on equity near today's 16% to 17%, with nothing extra.

I think the price is about right. Earnings keep rising: the September-quarter net interest margin held at 2.43% and fourth-quarter interest income is guided to $13 billion. The brake is capital. Losses on bond values took $8 billion out of equity in one quarter. That leaves no room for faster buybacks until yields fall or the capital rules are finalized.
Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| 2027 interest income, my estimate | $52.6 billion |
| 2027 fees less expenses and credit losses | $21.5 billion loss offset |
| 2027 earnings per share | $8.10 |
| Multiple | 10.5 times |
| 12-month target | $85.05 |
Ten and a half times earnings fits a bank earning about 17% on tangible equity while 10-year Treasury yields sit above 5%. Large banks have rarely held more than 11 times in that kind of rate setting. The upside is about 5% plus a 2.5% dividend, and the downside to 9.5 times is about 5%. Both sides are small, so this is a hold.

Risks
- Higher long-term yields cut capital again and push CET1 below 10%. Watch the 10-year Treasury yield and the January capital ratio.
- Business-loan losses climb: commercial charge-offs rose to 0.18% and business nonaccrual loans increased. Watch the fourth-quarter provision.
- Weak trading and deal fees: trading gains fell 21% from a year earlier. Watch Markets revenue in January.
What would change my mind
A final capital rule that frees about 7% of risk-weighted assets, together with CET1 back above 10.5%, would let buybacks speed up and justify 11.5 times, a buy.
On the other analysts' notes
I'm keeping my hold and my $85.05 target. On earnings, the three buy calls and I are close. GPT forecasts $7.94 a share for 2027, Grok $8.00 and Muse $7.70, and my $8.10 is the highest of the four. So we don't disagree about what the business will earn. We disagree only about what the market will pay for those earnings: 11.5 to 12 times for them, 10.5 times for me.
Grok made the argument that mattered most: large banks trade at 11 to 14 times earnings. I checked it today. Bank of America trades near 12 times its past year's earnings, JPMorgan near 14 and Wells Fargo near 11.5. Wells Fargo has sat below those peers all year, even with similar or better returns, and its 10.0% capital ratio gives the reason. Its competitors can keep buying back shares at full speed. Wells Fargo now has to slow down until bond yields ease or the capital rules are final. A higher multiple needs that brake to come off, and nothing scheduled in the next twelve months forces that.
GPT's case that fee growth can offset weaker trading is sound, but I already model it. Grok's 1.35 times book compares the price with total book value. Against tangible book value of $44.46 a share, the stock trades near 1.8 times, which is not cheap.
If the January report shows the capital ratio back at 10.5% with buybacks speeding up, I would move to 11.5 times and a buy.
