At $205 the shares require about $24 billion of 2027 free cash flow. I model $22 billion and 16.5 times, for $188 in twelve months.
Key points
- $24 billion of 2027 free cash flow is what $205 and 16.5 times on 1.93 billion shares requires.
- $22 billion is my 2027 free-cash-flow estimate after stripping Q2 timing and working-capital unwind.
- $7.12 trailing dividend still yields 3.5%, so total return is less negative than the price gap.
The call
The market is too optimistic. A $205 share price on 1.93 billion shares after buybacks needs $24 billion of next-year free cash flow at 16.5 times. That is well above the $16.6 billion Chevron generated in 2025 and above a normalized 2026 run-rate.
I believe 2027 free cash flow lands near $22 billion. Brent near $114 and Hess volumes help, but Q2’s $18.1 billion print included a $2.9 billion working-capital release and about $1.5 billion of timing. Midstream deconsolidation and a $3, 4 billion accounting loss do not add cash. The multiple stays 16.5 times cash, not earnings.

What 16.5 times FCF implies versus my 2027EAuthor estimates; shares 1.93 billion after buybacks
Valuation
| Item | Figure |
|---|
| 2027E free cash flow | $22 billion |
| Shares after buybacks | 1.93 billion |
| FCF per share | $11.40 |
| Multiple | 16.5 times |
| 12-month target | $188 |
Sixteen-and-a-half times is a full integrated-oil cash multiple when Brent is already high. Upside if cash beats $24 billion is modest; downside if oil mean-reverts or Q3 Gulf shut-ins linger is larger, which is why the rating is sell not hold.
Risks
- Brent stays above $110 through 2027, lifting cash toward the $24 billion the price needs.
- Guyana and TCO run above plan and offset any Permian plateau.
- Buybacks accelerate enough to cut the share count well below 1.93 billion.
What would change my mind
A Q3 print that shows free cash flow above $8 billion without another working-capital gift, plus a 2027 cash outlook above $24 billion.
