The market is about right: replacing older, low-yielding assets should lift earnings, but costlier deposits and renewed credit pressure limit the recovery. My twelve-month target is $233.68, supporting a Hold.
Key points
- $20.77 a share is my 2027 earnings estimate, with modest loan growth.
- $3.5 billion of interest-free deposits left between June and September quarter-end.
- $233.68 a share is my twelve-month target, without assuming capital-rule relief.
The call
The market expects a slow recovery, reasonably so. At my valuation of 11.25 times annual earnings, today's price requires roughly $19.14 a share. Holding my other assumptions constant, that means $7.25 billion of 2027 net interest income, the interest earned after paying depositors and lenders.
Quarter-end funding shifted away from interest-free depositsSource: M&T October 16, 2026 release; June 30 versus September 30 balances, $ millions.
I expect better earnings, but not a breakout. Older loans and securities will renew at higher yields, while mortgage servicing supports fees. Yet September's funding mix deteriorated at quarter-end, despite better quarterly averages. Recent market underperformance deserves respect: higher rates increase deposit costs and strain property borrowers rather than simply boosting bank profits.
Valuation
| My estimate or assumption | Value |
|---|
| 2027 net interest income plus fees | $10.50 billion |
| 2027 expenses plus credit provisions | $6.45 billion |
| 2027 taxes and preferred dividends | $1.14 billion |
| 2027 diluted earnings per common share | $20.77 |
| Target earnings multiple | 11.25 times |
| Twelve-month price target | $233.68 |
The target depends on lending income, not a rate-cut rescueAnalyst scenarios for 2027 GAAP net interest income; all other assumptions unchanged, October 16, 2026.
My forecast uses 140 million diluted shares and a 24% tax rate, with $650 million reserved against credit losses. The multiple recognizes a durable customer franchise but allows no premium for unproven technology savings or regulatory relief. Scenarios of $180 with weaker credit and $276 with stronger profits leave insufficient asymmetry for a Buy.
Risks
- Deposit competition could consume the repricing benefit; watch interest-free balances and deposit rates each quarter.
- Property and business credit could deteriorate together; watch whether criticized loans, management's watchlist, rise beyond September's $6.1 billion.
- Technology spending could outrun fee growth; watch whether quarterly expenses exceed management's fourth-quarter ceiling of $1.41 billion.
What would change my mind
Two consecutive quarters with lending margins above 3.70%, stable interest-free deposits and falling criticized loans would make me more optimistic.
