The market is too pessimistic about Stryker’s recovery from production disruptions. Continued procedure demand and better factory output should lift earnings, supporting a $338.21 twelve-month target without requiring a return to its former valuation.
Key points
- 9.0% organic sales growth in Q2 2026 suggests demand survived the disruptions.
- $16.91 a share is my 2027 adjusted earnings forecast, excluding specified accounting charges.
- $338.21 a share is my twelve-month target, supported by production recovery.
The call
The market is too pessimistic about recovery. At my valuation of 20 times annual earnings, today's price implies a 2027 operating margin of 23.2%, the share of sales left after operating costs. That is below the first-half 2026 adjusted margin, despite continuing hospital orders.
Supply trouble stands apart from demand growthU.S. organic sales growth (%), Q2 2026; Stryker July 30 earnings call.
I expect factories to recover faster than customers disappear. My forecast assumes 8% sales growth in 2027, not another exceptional catch-up year. Diversified procedure demand and robotic surgery support growth while equipment shipments recover. October's results and January's annual outlook should reveal whether shortages are temporary or customers have moved elsewhere.
Valuation
| Driver | My estimate |
|---|
| 2027 revenue | $29.16 billion |
| 2027 adjusted operating margin | 28.0% |
| 2027 diluted shares | 387 million |
| 2027 adjusted earnings per share | $16.91 |
| Twelve-month earnings multiple | 20 times |
| Twelve-month target | $338.21 a share |
The forecast deducts $420 million of annual net financing expense and applies a 15.5% tax rate, with no assumed buyback benefit. My 20-times multiple includes a two-times premium for the robotics franchise and diversified growth, worth about $34 a share versus an 18-times valuation. My buys have lagged; this buy does not depend on restoring the old valuation, and persistent supply failures would erase that premium.
Recovery in profit margins drives the share forecastAnalyst scenarios, October 8, 2026; FY2027 sales $29.16 billion, earnings valued at 20 times.
Risks
- Production recovery slips: watch equipment deliveries and vascular sales, not unquantified backlog claims; September's manufacturing remarks remain unverified.
- Hospitals cut equipment spending as borrowing costs bite: watch cancellations and weaker orders alongside procedure growth.
- Accounting profits outrun cash: first-half 2026 cash after equipment investment was $1.47 billion; watch inventory buildup, recurring excluded costs and acquisition spending.
What would change my mind
I would abandon the recovery thesis if first-half 2027 organic growth falls below 6% and adjusted operating margin fails to improve despite restored production.
