The market is about right about Chubb's resilience. Higher investment income and disciplined underwriting support a $381.50 twelve-month target, but slowing commercial insurance growth limits the upside.
Key points
- $30.52 a share is my 2027 core earnings forecast, excluding investment-market gains and certain acquisition costs.
- 86.2% is my 2027 insurance cost ratio, allowing for heavier catastrophe losses and fewer reserve releases.
- $381.50 a share is my twelve-month target, supporting Hold rather than Buy.
The call
The market is about right about earnings resilience. At 12.5 times next year's earnings, the share price requires $28.40 a share. Under my other assumptions, that permits an 88.2% insurance cost ratio, meaning claims and expenses divided by premiums. There is room for weaker underwriting, but not an earnings collapse.
Commercial insurance weakens while personal lines improveChubb October 20, 2026 supplement; underlying cost per $100 of premium, excluding catastrophes and old claims.
I expect investment income to absorb much of the insurance slowdown. My 2027 forecast includes $6.85 billion of investment income outside life insurance. Higher reinvestment yields support that estimate; shrinking commercial premiums and worsening underlying commercial margins argue against extrapolating this year's rapid earnings growth. The next renewal season tests both judgments.
Valuation
| Driver | Estimate |
|---|
| 2027 property-and-casualty earned premiums | $50.5 billion |
| 2027 insurance cost ratio | 86.2% |
| 2027 core earnings per share | $30.52 |
| Base earnings multiple | 11.5 times |
| Diversification and underwriting franchise premium | 1.0 times |
| Twelve-month target | $381.50 a share |
The franchise premium rewards the ability to reject inadequate prices while growing elsewhere; sustained reserve deterioration would remove it. My earnings estimate allows for modest share repurchases, not another exceptional improvement in insurance profitability. The target multiple leaves insufficient upside for a Buy, while investment income makes a bearish call premature.
A higher insurance cost ratio quickly erases the upsideAnalyst 2027 scenarios, October 20, 2026; same earnings multiple and other assumptions in each case.
Risks
- Commercial competition could outrun my allowance: watch renewal rates against rising claim costs.
- Older claims could consume more reserves: watch casualty charges rather than aggregate reserve releases.
- Higher yields could damage capital before helping income: watch bond losses and whether repurchases slow.
What would change my mind
Two consecutive quarters with underlying insurance costs above 84% of premiums and investment-income growth below 5% would invalidate my earnings cushion.
