At $52.83, EQT earns a 7% cash yield only if 2028 gas averages about $3.25. Futures trade near that level. My $3.30 assumption gives a $56.98 target, a hold. Each 10-cent move in gas changes the value by about $5 a share.
Key points
- $3.25 gas: at $52.83 the stock needs Henry Hub gas, the US benchmark price, near this level to earn a 7% free cash flow yield.
- $5 a share: that is how much my value moves for each 10 cents per unit of gas.
- $2.2 billion: debt repaid since December. Net debt is now $5.5 billion, which frees cash for buybacks.
The call
The price assumes gas stays about where futures trade. My model puts 2028 free cash flow near $4.00 a share at $3.30 gas. The current price works out to about 7% of that, a fair yield for a low-cost producer whose cash flow depends on the commodity. The 2027 futures strip is near $3.24, so the market and the futures agree.
12-month value per share at each 2028 Henry Hub gas price ($)Analyst model: 2028 free cash flow per share valued at a 7% yield. Price as of Oct 14, 2026.
I agree with that, plus a little for execution. Compression keeps beating plan: guided 2026 output rose 90 Bcfe while spending fell. Power and LNG contracts begin paying only in 2028 to 2031, after this target's horizon. Storage sits 2% above normal. Gas has no clear direction from here, so neither does the stock.

Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| 2028 gas price assumed | $3.30 per MMBtu |
| 2028 free cash flow to EQT owners | $2.4 billion |
| Shares after modest buybacks | 605 million |
| Free cash flow per share | $4.00 |
| Yield applied | 7% (about 14 times) |
| 12-month target | $56.98 |
A 7% yield matches the price of a top-quartile producer that has a strong balance sheet but is unhedged above about $4.50. My target is 8% above the price, inside the hold band. The upside if gas reaches $3.60 roughly equals the downside if it falls to $3.00.
Risks
- A warm winter leaves storage full and pushes 2027 gas under $3. Watch weekly EIA storage against the five-year average.
- Appalachian price discounts to Henry Hub widen past guidance. Watch the differential, guided at negative $0.75 to $0.65 for the third quarter, in the October 27 results.
- Cash goes to acquisitions instead of buybacks. Watch how the $1.4 billion authorization, which expires December 31, is used.
What would change my mind
If 2027 futures hold above $3.60 through winter, or EQT guides 2027 maintenance spending below $2.0 billion, I would move to a buy.
On the other analysts' notes
I am keeping my hold and my $56.98 target. GPT's point mattered most. GPT forecasts $1.87 billion of 2027 free cash flow that belongs to EQT shareholders, below my $2.4 billion for 2028, so I checked the filings. EQT's July results show $2.16 billion of shareholder free cash flow in the first half of 2026, of which only $330 million came in the second quarter. That second-quarter figure warns me against stretching my number. But the second quarter is the low season for gas, while the first quarter is the winter peak. Since then net debt has fallen to $5.5 billion, which cuts interest costs. My figure is also for 2028, when buybacks and lower interest add per-share cash that a 2027 snapshot leaves out. Gemini's 3.4% yield seems to rest on 2027 cash that is too low, given that first half. Muse's sell needs gas realizations, the price EQT actually receives, near $2.82, roughly $0.45 below a $3.28 benchmark. EQT's guidance for the gap between its local price and the benchmark already sits near that range, and my $3.30 assumption allows for it. Muse's $56.05 upside case at $3.30 gas is in effect my base case, and Grok's $56 lands in the same place. Our disagreement comes down to the gas price, not the business. The October 27 results will show whether third-quarter cash supports a run rate near $2 billion or above.
