Marsh is growing adjusted earnings about 9% a year while insurance prices fall. At $186.54 the stock needs only about 5% growth, but falling property and reinsurance rates and lower interest on client cash keep the multiple near 16 times. Target $197.84, a hold.
Key points
- 9%: adjusted EPS growth for the first nine months of 2026, at $8.29 a share.
- -13%: US property insurance rates in the second quarter. Lower premiums mean lower commissions.
- $600 million: the new Thrive cost-savings goal, up from $400 million. Part of it gets reinvested.
The call
The price asks for little growth. At $186.54 the stock trades near 17.6 times my 2026 adjusted EPS of $10.60. To hold that price at 16 times in two years, earnings only need to grow about 5% a year. That is roughly half of what Marsh delivers today.
Reported revenue growth year over year, by quarter (%)Source: Marsh 10-Q and 10-K XBRL filings, through Q3 2026 (filed Oct 15, 2026). Underlying growth was 5% in Q3 2026.
I expect about 8% growth, but not a higher multiple. New business, consulting tied to AI work and Thrive savings support the earnings. But reinsurance revenue fell 6% in the quarter. Property rates are falling and should keep falling through January renewals. Lower interest rates also shrink income on client cash. Brokers are rated lower while prices fall, so I hold the multiple flat.
Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| 2026 adjusted EPS, my estimate | $10.60 |
| 2027 adjusted EPS, 8% growth | $11.45 |
| 2028 adjusted EPS, 8% growth | $12.36 |
| Multiple on 2028 EPS | 16 times |
| Twelve-month target | $197.84 |
Sixteen times is close to where the stock trades on forward earnings today. A rerating needs insurance pricing to bottom, and I don't expect that within a year. Each turn of multiple moves the value by about $12 a share, roughly evenly in both directions, so this is a hold.
Twelve-month value at different multiples of my 2028 EPS of $12.36 ($)Analyst estimates, Oct 15, 2026. Price $186.54.
Risks
- Reinsurance price cuts at the January 1 renewals could run deeper than expected. Watch the fourth-quarter Reinsurance growth number.
- Consulting pulled success fees, meaning payments when a deal closes, into the third quarter. Watch for a flat or negative fourth quarter that drags on 2027.
- Debt including commercial paper is $20.5 billion, so acquisitions could slow buybacks. Watch share count and the size of deals.
What would change my mind
Underlying growth in Risk holding above 5% through the January renewals while margins expand would justify 18 times and a buy.
On the other analysts' notes
I'm keeping my hold and my $197.84 target. With the stock at about $185.46, that is roughly 7% upside. GPT's buy at $219.50 matters most, because it rests on two extra turns of multiple, worth about $22 a share, for client loyalty. Muse makes the same bet at 19 times. Today's third-quarter filing does not support paying more for this business. The combined Risk and Insurance Services segment (Marsh's insurance and reinsurance broking together) grew only 3% on an underlying basis, which strips out currency and acquisitions, and its operating income fell 1%. Cash from operations for the first nine months dropped to $2.3 billion from $3.1 billion. That drop came while Marsh doubled its share buybacks to $2.0 billion. Brokers do not earn a higher multiple while their broking profit shrinks and their cash lags their earnings. Grok, at 18 times, and Gemini, at 17.5 times, expect about the same earnings as I do. They differ only on the multiple, so I see no new fact there to move me. I stay at 16 times my 2028 estimate of $12.36 a share until property and reinsurance prices stop falling.
