Shell cash peaked on temporary items while ARC adds volume with dilution. At 13 times 2027 earnings, upside plus dividend only tracks the market.
Key points
- $21.4 billion of operating cash flow in Q2 2026 included large temporary help from working capital (cash tied up in daily stock and bills).
- $3.5 billion to $6.5 billion of combined outflows guided for Q3 2026 from pollution permits and working capital will cut cash sharply.
- 370 thousand barrels a day of new Canadian gas from ARC in September 2026 came with 228 million new shares issued.
The call
Market expects high fuel prices to hold. At $97.80 per ADS (one ADS equals two ordinary shares in one United States package) it sells for about 13 times 2027 earnings. That needs Brent oil (the global oil price) near $90 per barrel through 2027.
Quarterly net income shows a peak, not a run rate ($ billions)Sources: Shell 6-Ks and 20-F; Q3 22, Q4 22, Q3 23, Q4 23 not in briefing. As of Oct 7, 2026.
Cash flow falls before it rebuilds. I see $5.0 billion of net income in the third quarter of 2026. I see $4.5 billion of net income in the fourth quarter of 2026 as gas trading cools. New Canadian gas in 2027 then lifts cash per share.
Valuation
| Driver | Figure |
|---|
| 2027E net income | $22.0 billion |
| ADS count after ARC deal | 2.90 billion ADSs |
| 2027E earnings per ADS | $7.59 per ADS |
| Target multiple | 13.5 times |
| 12-month target | $102.43 per ADS |
Big oil firms often trade at 12 to 14 times mid cycle earnings for 2027. I use 13.5 times for strong gas trading offset by weak chemicals. With about 5% price upside in 12 months plus a 3% dividend yield for the next 12 months, reward fits a hold.
Risks
- Oil falls below $70 per barrel in 2027 on new supply, which you would see in lower sales prices and trading profit.
- Q3 2026 cash trails profit on permits and stock builds, which you would see in operating cash flow below $10 billion for Q3 2026.
- ARC wells in Canada underdeliver in 2027, which you would see in flat gas output and higher cost per barrel.
What would change my mind
Sustained Brent oil above $100 per barrel through 2027 with ARC output above plan would lift lasting earnings power.
