Power demand supports substantial earnings growth, but the stock requires either much stronger sales or a persistently richer valuation. I initiate Sell with a $726.15 twelve-month target, while forecasting continued business expansion.
Key points
- $726.15 a share is my October 2027 target; initiate Sell.
- $33.01 a share is my 2027 earnings forecast, despite slower construction growth.
- $392 million of second-quarter 2026 profit came from accrued tariff refunds, not deliveries.
The call
The market is too optimistic. At my 22-times earnings multiple, today's price requires almost $100 billion of 2027 revenue, rather than my $89 billion. Alternatively, investors must keep paying nearly 25 times my earnings forecast, despite factory-expansion costs and higher borrowing rates.
Construction still exceeds all engine and turbine sales ($ billions)Source: Caterpillar Q2 2026 10-Q, August 5, 2026; external sales, before remaining corporate items.
I expect growth, not a collapse. Power generation was only 15% of second-quarter revenue; faster engine production cannot instantly remake the whole business. Management places most new prime-power overhaul work after 2030. My 2027 forecast assumes 25% Power & Energy growth, but just 5% construction growth.
Valuation
| Driver | My estimate |
|---|
| 2027 revenue | $88.8 billion |
| 2027 net profit margin | 16.7% |
| 2027 diluted shares, including employee awards | 450 million |
| 2027 earnings per share | $33.01 |
| October 2027 price / 2027 earnings | 22 times |
| October 2027 target | $726.15 a share |
The profit estimate uses a 21.5% operating margin, a 23% tax rate and $200 million of net income outside operations. A 22-times multiple rewards repeat parts sales without valuing machinery like software. My weaker-demand scenario gives $495 a share versus $964 with faster growth and a richer multiple, so Sell is a valuation call, not a collapse forecast.

Risks
- Production expands faster: watch engine deliveries and margins excluding tariff refunds.
- Tariff relief lifts lasting earnings: watch recurring import costs, not one-time recovery accruals.
- Investors sustain a richer multiple: watch order growth alongside cash generation without fresh deposits; customer advances supplied $2.6 billion of first-half 2026 operating cash.
What would change my mind
Two consecutive quarters supporting at least $37.10 of annual earnings per share, without tariff refunds or exceptional investment gains, would overturn my view.
