The market is too pessimistic about cash available for share repurchases. I expect modestly lower operating profit next year, not management's conditional growth, but fewer shares should still lift earnings per share and support a $91.39 twelve-month target.
Key points
- $9.2 billion of estimated 2027 automotive cash after investment and electric-car settlements supports repurchases.
- $14.50 billion of estimated 2027 adjusted operating profit assumes inflation outweighs operating improvements.
- $91.39 a share is my twelve-month target, without a technology premium.
The call
The market is too pessimistic about profit durability. At my valuation multiple, today's price requires roughly $12.2 billion of 2027 adjusted operating profit. That represents an approximately 19% decline from the midpoint of this year's guidance, assuming my forecast share count.
Factory shipments rose while customer deliveries fell (thousand vehicles)GM Q3 2026 10-Q, filed October 20, 2026; shipments and deliveries have different reporting perimeters.
I expect a smaller profit decline and continued repurchases. Warranty savings, lower electric-car losses and richer truck sales should absorb most inflation. Falling settlement payments release cash even without profit growth. January's outlook and the spring truck launches should test this thesis. Recent underperformance nevertheless argues against assuming a rapid recovery.
Valuation
| My estimate or method | Value |
|---|
| 2027 adjusted operating profit | $14.50 billion |
| 2027 adjusted net profit | $11.39 billion |
| 2027 average diluted shares, including share awards | 810 million |
| 2027 adjusted earnings per share | $14.06 |
| Twelve-month earnings multiple | 6.5 times |
| Twelve-month price target | $91.39 |
Net profit assumes a 22% tax rate and $100 million of net automotive interest income; the target uses unrounded earnings. The multiple gives no premium for software or driver assistance because vehicle manufacturing remains cyclical. My stress case is about $63 and my stronger-execution case about $111, making this a Buy rather than a high-conviction bet.
Risks
- Buyers resist higher truck prices: watch dealer inventories and discounts as new models arrive; industry borrowing costs still constrain affordability.
- Inflation persists: watch January's cost outlook for pressure beyond my allowance, especially steel, logistics and memory chips.
- Cash disappoints: watch actual automotive cash after investment, not the adjusted headline, and whether repurchases slow; my forecast assumes approximately $6 billion of 2027 buybacks, not the entire authorization.
What would change my mind
I would withdraw the Buy if 2027 guidance and subsequent results point to adjusted operating profit below $12 billion or automotive cash after investment and settlements below $7 billion.
