The market is about right about the recovery. Growing subscriptions and index-linked assets support higher earnings, but weaker profits elsewhere and rising investment costs limit the upside. I initiate Hold with a $625.08 twelve-month target.
Key points
- $625.08 a share is my twelve-month target; initiate Hold.
- 8.7% growth in Q3 2026 organic subscription contracts supports durable demand.
- $989.8 million of nine-month 2026 free cash flow was slightly below last year.
The call
The market is about right about the recovery. At my 28-times earnings valuation, today's price requires roughly $21.18 a share in 2027. That means about 7.5% revenue growth with a 56.5% operating margin, using the share count and financing assumptions below.
Index is the only large source of profit growthMSCI Q3 2026 10-Q, October 20, 2026; adjusted EBITDA ($ millions), before interest, taxes and depreciation.
I expect stronger sales, not a valuation surge. My 2027 revenue forecast grows 12.5%, supported by subscriptions and index-linked assets. BlackRock's inflows reinforce demand, but falling licensing rates and weaker profits outside Index limit the payoff. January's spending outlook should clarify whether better sales become cash.
Valuation
| Driver | My estimate |
|---|
| 2027 revenue | $3.97 billion |
| 2027 operating margin | 56.5% |
| 2027 earnings per diluted share | $22.32 |
| Base earnings multiple | 24 times |
| Benchmark-franchise premium | 4 times |
| October 2027 target | $625.08 a share |
Revenue includes $2.8 billion of subscriptions and $1.08 billion of asset-linked fees; earnings assume $300 million of net financing and other expense, a 19% tax rate and 70.5 million diluted shares in 2027. Entrenched benchmarks deserve the premium, which customer substitution would erase, while higher rates restrain further expansion. My stronger-demand case reaches about $778, versus about $486 with weaker growth and a lower multiple, insufficient asymmetry for a Buy.
Risks
- Licensing prices could fall faster; watch ETF fee growth against growth in average client assets.
- Sustainability cancellations could spread; watch retention and net new subscription sales through mid-2027.
- Software investment could flatter earnings; watch capitalized development costs and cash after all investment. Nine-month 2026 receivables also grew faster than revenue, while debt-funded buybacks raised interest costs.
What would change my mind
Two quarters above 10% organic subscription growth, accompanied by recovering Analytics margins and improving cash after software investment, would justify a higher target.
