The market is too pessimistic about earnings durability. New business and retained cost savings should outweigh weaker insurance pricing, supporting a twelve-month target of $219.50 without assuming a reinsurance recovery.
Key points
- $10.97 a share is my 2027 earnings forecast after recurring cash costs.
- 5% growth in third-quarter core broking supports resilience despite cheaper insurance.
- $219.50 a share is my twelve-month target; initiate Buy.
The call
The market is too pessimistic about durable earnings. At 20 times earnings, today's price requires a 2027 operating margin of roughly 23% on my revenue forecast. I expect 26%, after cash restructuring costs. Falling insurance prices explain caution, but do not require collapsing broker profits.
Broking growth survives falling insurance prices- First nine months 2026
- Third quarter 2026
Marsh October 15, 2026 release; growth excludes currency, acquisitions and other comparability effects.
New customers should outweigh weaker insurance commissions. Aon's latest quarter showed growth despite unfavorable reinsurance pricing. I forecast flat reinsurance revenue and slower consulting growth as early success fees unwind. Retained cost savings and fewer shares should lift earnings through next autumn. Year-long market underperformance counsels patience.
Valuation
I forecast 5% revenue growth for 2027. Earnings exclude acquired-intangible amortization, an accounting charge, but retain stock compensation and $300 million of cash restructuring and integration costs. I assume $1.02 billion of interest expense, a 25% tax rate and 470 million diluted shares for 2027.
| My twelve-month valuation | Estimate |
|---|
| 2027 revenue | $30.0 billion |
| 2027 operating margin after cash costs | 26% |
| 2027 earnings per share, defined above | $10.97 |
| Ordinary earnings multiple | 18 times |
| Trusted-adviser franchise premium | 2 times |
| Twelve-month target | $219.50 |
Eighteen times suits steady, mid-single-digit growth; two extra turns, worth $22 a share, reward repeat client relationships. Client losses would erase that premium. My weaker and stronger operating cases yield roughly $173 and $261, supporting Buy without counting all savings as profit.
What different 2027 profit margins mean for the sharesAnalyst scenarios, October 15, 2026; cash-cost margins, same revenue and 20 times earnings in every case.
Risks
- Cheaper insurance cuts commissions faster than sales grow; watch core broking growth fall below 3%.
- Savings fund hiring instead of profits; watch margins stall and restructuring payments persist.
- Cash collections disappoint: nine-month free cash flow fell 29%; watch receivables keep outgrowing revenue.
What would change my mind
Two consecutive quarters below 3% core broking growth with falling adjusted margins would overturn my earnings forecast.
