At $62.98, Kroger costs about 12 times this year's guided earnings of $5.20 a share. Sales growth has stalled near zero and the Albertsons damages trial is under way. I see about 5% earnings growth and a $64.54 target, a hold.
Key points
- 0.2%: identical-store sales growth last quarter, excluding fuel, down from 3.4% a year earlier.
- 12 times: the price against guided 2026 earnings of $5.20 a share, about where steady grocers usually trade.
- $0.6 billion to $9 billion: what Albertsons is claiming in the damages trial that began October 19.
The call
At $62.98 the price expects only modest growth. Twelve times earnings works out to about $5.25 a share for 2027, roughly flat from this year's $5.20 midpoint. The market is not asking for the 7% to 11% yearly growth management promised on October 20.

I think the market is about right, so this is a hold. Fewer shares will add a few percent to earnings, but store sales are barely growing. Management will also spend $5 billion on lower prices by 2029. I expect 2027 earnings of $5.46 a share, about 5% growth, which is the low end of what the company promises.
12-month value per share by P/E on my 2027 EPS of $5.46My arithmetic, Oct 20, 2026; each net of $0.98 a share expected Albertsons cost
Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| 2026 adjusted EPS, guidance midpoint | $5.20 |
| My 2027 EPS, 5% growth | $5.46 |
| Multiple, price to earnings | 12 times |
| Value before litigation | $65.52 |
| Expected Albertsons cost, after tax, per share | minus $0.98 |
| 12-month target | $64.54 |
Twelve times fits a grocer with flat sales growth, a 2.9% dividend and buybacks. Each turn of multiple moves the target about $5.50 a share. The trial outcome is lopsided: a full $9 billion award would cost about $11.70 a share, while a win adds only about $1.
Risks
- A large court award could force Kroger to pause buybacks. Watch the Delaware Chancery ruling and any settlement.
- The price cuts could cost more than the savings that pay for them. Watch gross margin excluding fuel in the December report.
- Walmart and Costco keep taking share from Kroger. Watch for identical sales falling below zero in the fourth quarter, once drug-pricing rules cut pharmacy revenue by about 150 basis points (1.5 percentage points).
What would change my mind
A clean trial win, together with identical sales back above 1.5% excluding drug-pricing effects, would make me a buyer. Losing the trial for more than $3 billion would make me a seller.
On the other analysts' notes
I'm keeping my hold and my $64.54 target. Muse's buy case mattered most, because it is the only call that changes the rating. It rests on 9% earnings growth next year, and the drivers Muse names don't get there. Muse points to $800 million of buybacks left this year. On a company worth about $40 billion, that retires roughly 2% of the shares. Store sales growth of 0.2% adds almost nothing. Retail media profit is real but not broken out, and the $5 billion of price cuts has to come out of the same savings. That leaves growth near 5%, which is my forecast.
Muse's buy target, and the $66 to $67 targets from Gemini, GPT and Grok, also give no weight to the Albertsons trial that began October 19. I subtract an expected cost of about $1 a share. That cost is lopsided: a full award would take about $11.70 a share off the stock, while a win adds only about $1.
GPT's point that first-half cash flow after capital spending fell sharply supports my caution on buybacks rather than moving me. With no new fact since my note, the rating and target stay where they are.
