At about 12 times forward earnings, HDFC Bank's price assumes roughly 12% annual profit growth. The October rate hike should help margins, but costly deposits, a weaker rupee and an untested CEO cap a twelve-month target at $25.59.
Key points
- 12 times my forward earnings, against a bank that grew profit about 3% in the year to September.
- 3.32% net interest margin, which management calls the low point now that India is raising rates.
- 37% fall in the ADS over 12 months, after the chairman's March exit and a weaker rupee.
The call
The price asks for steady growth, not a recovery. At ₹712 a share in Mumbai, the stock trades at 1.8 times book value on a 13% return on equity. That math works if profit grows about 12% a year. That is ordinary for this bank, though above the last four quarters.

I expect growth to reach that pace, but not much faster, so the stock tracks the market. About 70% of loans are floating rate, so the October repo hike should lift yields by December. But funding cost held at 4.4%, and big deposit outflows pushed the bank toward costlier wholesale money. A new CEO starting October 27 has no plan out yet.
Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| Earnings per share, fiscal 2027 (my estimate) | ₹54 |
| Earnings growth, fiscal 2028 and 2029 | 11.5% and 12% |
| Forward earnings per share by October 2027 | ₹64 |
| Multiple | 12.5 times |
| Target per ADS (3 shares, ₹96.5 per dollar, 2.6% ADS premium) | $25.59 |
The 12.5 times multiple is a touch above today's 12.4 times, which allows for a modest margin recovery but not the old premium. The target is about 11% above the price, short of a buy. Each turn of multiple moves the target about $2.

Risks
- Deposits keep leaving and the bank must fund loans with costly wholesale money; watch the share of low-cost current and savings deposits, now 31.6%.
- The rupee keeps weakening as rates rise, which shrinks dollar returns even if rupee profit grows; watch the dollar-rupee rate past 97.
- The new CEO resets with higher provisions or slower growth; watch his first plan and the January quarter results.
What would change my mind
A margin rising above 3.45% by the March 2027 quarter, with low-cost deposits growing faster than loans, would make this a buy.
On the other analysts' notes
I am keeping my hold and my $25.59 target. GPT made the point that mattered most. His earnings estimate of about ₹61 a share for fiscal 2028 is close to my ₹64 forward figure. Gemini and Muse land near the same number. So we do not really disagree about profit. The gap comes almost entirely from the multiple: GPT, Muse and Gemini pay 14.5 to 15 times earnings, while I pay 12.5 times, about where the stock trades today. Paying more needs evidence the market does not yet have. That would be margins actually rising and low-cost deposits growing again. Today the margin is still falling, funding cost is stuck at 4.4%, and a new CEO starts October 27 with no plan published. Gemini and Muse point to the old 18 to 19 times as an anchor, but that is the premium the market has just taken away. It is not a new fact, and it is not a catalyst. If the March 2027 quarter shows a margin above 3.45% with low-cost deposits growing faster than loans, I will move to their multiple and to a buy. Until then, at an 11% expected gain, this is a hold. Grok's $24.50 target sits close to mine.
