The market is too pessimistic about next year's recurring earnings. Payments, custody and wealth growth should outweigh slower trading and smaller buybacks. My twelve-month target is $144.62, excluding the expected Mexico-related accounting loss from recurring earnings.
Key points
- $12.58 a share is my recurring earnings forecast for 2027.
- 31.2% was payments and custody's annualized return on tangible equity in Q3.
- $7 billion of forecast annual buybacks allows room to rebuild capital.
The call
The market asks too little of the recovery. At my valuation multiple, today's price requires recurring earnings of $10.86 a share. With my expense and credit assumptions, that means $91.2 billion of 2027 revenue. Recent underperformance deserves respect, but stronger client activity argues against extrapolating the trading slowdown across the bank.
Payments and custody earn more on shareholders' capitalSource: Citi Q3 2026 release and October 13, 2026 earnings call; annualized quarterly returns.
I expect growth to outweigh the slowdown. My 2027 revenue forecast is $95 billion after Mexico leaves the consolidated accounts. Payments and custody lead; wealth follows. The newly verified Aegon servicing mandate supports client demand, although its fees are undisclosed. I assume slower buybacks, not unrestricted access to surplus capital.
Valuation
| Driver | My estimate |
|---|
| 2027 revenue | $95 billion |
| 2027 operating expenses | $55 billion |
| 2027 credit provisions | $10 billion |
| 2027 recurring diluted earnings | $12.58 a share |
| Earnings multiple, including network premium | 11.5 times |
| October 2027 target | $144.62 a share |
Earnings use a 25% tax rate, deductions for preferred dividends and minority interests, and 1.65 billion diluted shares. The multiple includes half a turn, worth $6.29 a share, for the global payments network; stalled client growth would erase that premium. The expected Mexico currency-loss charge is excluded from recurring earnings, while recession exposure limits this to a buy.
The target depends on revenue, not a richer valuationAnalyst scenarios for 2027; $55bn expenses, $10bn credit provisions and 11.5 times recurring earnings.
Risks
- Capital requirements could crowd out repurchases; watch the regulatory capital cushion and quarterly buyback pace.
- Higher rates help lending income but hurt bond values and borrowers; watch card delinquencies and unrealized securities losses.
- Growth may consume its own profits; watch expense growth against revenue and wealth fees against client inflows.
What would change my mind
Two consecutive quarters of recurring returns below 11% on tangible shareholder capital would undermine my recovery forecast.
