International growth remains healthy, but rebuilding ZYN's U.S. momentum requires spending and sharper pricing. I expect earnings to rise without sustaining today's premium valuation, producing a twelve-month target of $176.48.
Key points
- 23 times expected 2026 adjusted earnings requires a durable growth premium.
- 9% lower U.S. gross profit in Q2 2026 exposes the cost of defending ZYN.
- $176.48 a share is my October 2027 target despite continued earnings growth.
The call
The market is too optimistic about profitable growth. Today's valuation is roughly 23 times my 2026 earnings estimate. At my prospective multiple, maintaining today's price requires almost $9.90 of 2027 earnings per share, or 17% growth. That demands more than a recovery in pouch sales.
U.S. profit is shrinking while international businesses expandPMI Q2 10-Q, filed July 24, 2026; net revenue and gross profit, $ millions.
I expect growth, but a more expensive recovery. International heated tobacco supports earnings while U.S. promotions and cheaper pouch formats absorb part of that benefit. My 2027 forecast assumes 6% revenue growth and modest margin improvement, not collapse. The next two results should reveal whether new ZYN buyers compensate for lower profitability.
Valuation
| Driver | My estimate |
|---|
| 2026 adjusted earnings per share | $8.43 |
| 2027 underlying earnings growth | 8% |
| 2027 currency and dilution drag per share | $0.05 |
| 2027 adjusted earnings per share | $9.05 |
| October 2027 earnings multiple | 19.5 times |
| Twelve-month target per share | $176.48 |
Adjusted earnings exclude specified accounting charges; my bridge uses the unrounded guidance midpoint. The multiple still rewards international growth, but recurring acquisition-accounting exclusions, competition and restricted Russian cash limit the premium. My bull scenario reaches $223, while my bear scenario falls to $153; the central forecast supports a sell, not a strong sell.

Risks
- ZYN rebounds profitably: watch consumer purchases alongside U.S. gross profit, rather than distributor shipments alone.
- Japan strengthens faster: watch heated-tobacco consumption after October's tax change and whether buyers return to premium products.
- Currency or falling interest rates sustain the premium: watch dollar earnings upgrades and financing costs, separating these from operating progress.
What would change my mind
Two consecutive quarters of double-digit ZYN consumer-purchase growth with improving U.S. gross margins would overturn my expectation that recovery requires sustained profit sacrifice.
