Visa should compound earnings about 12% to 14% a year, but the stock already trades near 25 times next year's earnings. A 12-month value near $382 leaves a return close to the market's, so hold.
Key points
- $382 target, 3% above the $371.80 price: a hold.
- 13% a year earnings growth to fiscal 2028 (my estimate) is what the price needs.
- 10% volume growth in the June quarter, with guidance raised, shows no weakness today.
The call
The price asks for steady compounding, not a surprise. At 25 times fiscal 2027 earnings, Visa must grow profit per share about 13% a year and keep its multiple. That is roughly what management just guided.
Target value by forward P/E on FY28 EPS ($ a share)Analyst arithmetic; EPS path is my estimate. Price $371.80 on Oct 7, 2026
I believe the business delivers that, but the market is about right. Payments volume grew 10% and guidance rose. Yet June had one-off help from World Cup spending and tax refunds. Regulation, the Justice Department debit case and stablecoins cap the multiple from expanding.
Valuation
| Item | Figure |
|---|
| Fiscal 2025 EPS (Visa's non-GAAP profit per share, my base) | $11.47 |
| Fiscal 2026 EPS, growth 14.5% (guidance: low-end mid-teens) | $13.13 |
| Fiscal 2028 EPS, growth 13% then 12% (my estimate) | $16.62 |
| Multiple on forward earnings, October 2027 | 23 times |
| Twelve-month target | $382.29 |
I use 23 times, below today's 25 times on next year's earnings, because growth is slowing from the boosted 17% quarter and legal risk persists. At 20 times the stock is worth $332, down 11%. At 27 times it is $449, up 21%. That spread is balanced, so the call is a hold, not a buy or sell.
Risks
- Regulation or a lost debit-routing case cuts fees: watch the Justice Department case and merchant-settlement approval.
- Stablecoins and instant payments bypass the network: watch Visa's disclosed settlement volumes and client incentives, which rose.
- Spending slows after World Cup and refund effects: watch fiscal fourth-quarter volume growth and 2027 guidance, with a date not yet confirmed.
What would change my mind
Fiscal 2027 guidance for revenue growth above 13%, or a pullback to about $320, would make me a buyer; guidance below 10% would make me a seller.
