At $12.51 the price needs Venture Global to sell its uncontracted LNG at about $7 per MMBtu in 2028, after the rich startup cargoes end. My $7.25 assumption gives $13.63, so I cut the rating to hold.
Key points
- $7 per MMBtu: the 2028 fee on unsold LNG that today's price needs. I assume $7.25.
- $2.60 per MMBtu: my estimate of the long-contract fee that Plaquemines moves onto after its commercial start.
- $17.2 billion: the most the new power-equipment deals could cost if every order goes ahead. No customer is signed.
The call
The price needs fees on unsold gas to stay high. At $12.51 the company is worth about $76 billion including debt and minority stakes. That works out to about $9.9 billion of EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax and depreciation) in 2028 at 8.5 times. Getting there takes about $7 per MMBtu on roughly 24 million tonnes a year of uncontracted LNG.
Share value in a year vs. fee on uncontracted LNG ($ per share)My model: 2028 EBITDA at 8.5 times, less ~$51.5B of debt, minorities and BP reserve. Price as of Oct 15, 2026.
I think the market has it about right, which is why I am cutting from buy. When Plaquemines reaches commercial operation, most of its output switches from startup cargoes sold near $6.80 to 20-year contracts near $2.60. So 2027 EBITDA likely falls below this year's $8.9 billion before CP2 lifts it. On top of that, the AI-utility plan adds a large capital call with no customer yet.

Valuation
| Item | Figure |
|---|
| 2028 EBITDA (my estimate, $7.25 fee) | $10.3 billion |
| Multiple | 8.5 times |
| Enterprise value | $87.5 billion |
| Less debt, minorities and BP reserve, late 2027 | $51.5 billion |
| Target (2.64 billion shares) | $13.63 |
I use 8.5 times because that is today's multiple, so I assume no re-rating. Each $1 move in the fee shifts the value by about $4 a share. That spread is wide in both directions, which supports a hold rather than a buy.
Risks
- BP arbitration: damages hearing in May 2027 on a claim of $3.7 billion or more. Watch for a reserve in the November 10 results.
- Plaquemines commercial start slips into 2027, or the power plan needs fresh equity. Watch the commercial-start notice and any financing filing.
- European gas falls back toward $8, which would push fees on new short-term deals toward $5. Watch the summer 2027 TTF futures price.
What would change my mind
Medium-term contracts on the spare capacity signed above $8 per MMBtu, or a signed data-center customer with project financing, would take me back to buy.
On the other analysts' notes
I hold at $13.63. The point that mattered most was Grok's and Muse's forecast of $10.2 to $10.5 billion of 2027 cash profit, above this year's $8.9 billion. That cuts against my view that 2027 dips when Plaquemines moves from startup cargoes near $6.80 onto 20-year contracts near $2.60. It does not move my target, because I value the company on 2028, when CP2's added output and the fee on unsold gas decide the value, and their 7.5 times multiple lands within a dollar of me anyway. Gemini's warning that debt will pass $42 billion is already in my numbers: I subtract $51.5 billion for debt, minority stakes and a BP reserve. GPT's buy needs 15 times the earnings of a leveraged company whose profit is stepping down, and that multiple is what I reject, not its 2027 cash profit estimate, which is close to mine. The stock still turns on whether unsold LNG fetches about $7 per MMBtu in 2028, and I assume $7.25.
