The market is too optimistic about how quickly lending and wealth-management growth will lift earnings. I expect continued profit growth, but a lower earnings multiple produces a 12-month target of US$169.17.
Key points
- C$20.19 a share in annual earnings is required to support today's price at my forecast multiple.
- C$17.87 a share is my fiscal 2027 earnings estimate, with modestly improving profitability.
- US$169.17 a share is my 12-month target; stronger lending alone cannot justify today's valuation.
The call
The market is too optimistic. At October's exchange rate, the shares cost 17.2 times trailing earnings. At my expected 13.5-times multiple, today's price requires earnings growth of 27% from the trailing year. That is a demanding hurdle for a mature bank whose consumer-banking profits declined last quarter.

I expect growth, not a collapse. My fiscal 2027 revenue forecast rises 7.5%, slightly faster than expenses. Acquisition-related interest-income headwinds disappear from comparisons in fiscal Q2. But wealth and trading depend on buoyant markets, while additional lending consumes capital before related fees arrive. Quarterly disclosures should expose that gap within twelve months.

| Fiscal 2027 expenses and credit provisions | C$45.6 billion |
| Fiscal 2027 diluted earnings | C$17.87 a share |

| Twelve-month target | US$169.17 a share |
Earnings deduct a 23% tax rate and preferred distributions, with repurchases reducing diluted shares to 1.36 billion. The multiple rewards strong returns on shareholder capital without treating market-sensitive profits as guaranteed. A continued 17-times multiple produces about US$213, but a 12-times multiple produces about US$150; that downside supports a sell.
The earnings multiple decides the dollar outcomeOur FY27 EPS forecast; USD/CAD held at October 7, 2026 Bank of Canada rate. US$ per share.
Risks
- Wealth markets could remain stronger than expected; watch client assets and whether profit margins keep expanding without faster spending.
- Repurchases could lift earnings more quickly; watch share reductions alongside the capital buffer, rather than the authorization alone.
- Canadian-dollar appreciation could raise the U.S. share value; watch exchange rates, while lower interest rates could also weaken bank income.
What would change my mind
Fiscal 2027 quarterly earnings consistently approaching C$5 a share, without reserve releases or weaker capital protection, would undermine my forecast.
