Fast cloud growth is real, but the cost is heavy spending, new shares and a weaker shopping business. My sum-of-the-parts value is about $107 a share, almost the current price, so the stock should track the market.
Key points
- $107 target, about 1% above the $106.28 price: a forecast that the stock tracks the market.
- 45% growth in external cloud revenue (June quarter 2026), against a 7% fall in customer management revenue.
- 710 million new shares sold in August at HK$112.70 to fund AI buildout, reversing buybacks.
The call
The price already requires cloud to keep growing near 40% a year while commerce profit stabilizes. At $106.28 the market values cloud, shopping and cash at roughly what I add up below.
Sum of the parts per ADS ($)Analyst arithmetic; ADS count 2.49 billion (19.9 billion shares / 8); FX 7.1 RMB per $
I expect that balance to hold, not tip. Cloud demand outruns supply, but spending is large and payback takes three years by management's own framework. Commerce profit is squeezed by quick-commerce losses and a subsidy accounting change. Neither side clearly wins within twelve months.
Valuation
| Driver | Figure |
|---|
| Cloud revenue, next 12 months | $153 billion value at 4 times sales on about RMB 1.09 trillion, I estimate |
| Commerce profit (EBITA, earnings before interest, tax, amortization) | RMB 60 billion, at 8 times: $68 billion |
| Other businesses and investments | $30 billion |
| Net cash after debt | $15 billion |
| Total, per ADS (2.49 billion ADSs) | $107 a share |
Cloud at 4 times sales is below what fast-growing AI infrastructure peers earn, but it is capital heavy, so I do not pay more. Upside needs cloud margins to rise and quick-commerce losses to end. Downside is a failed payback or a regulatory hit. The spread is balanced, so Hold.
Risks
- Commerce erodes faster: watch customer management revenue and quick-commerce losses in the September quarter report.
- Regulatory and legal: the antitrust and data probes, the US military-company list and class actions; watch for formal findings.
- Capital spending overruns or more share sales: watch cash flow, which fell to $11 billion in fiscal 2026 from $23 billion.
What would change my mind
Two straight quarters of cloud growth above 45% with rising margins and commerce profit stabilizing would move me to Buy; a cloud slowdown or a new equity raise would move me to Sell.
On the other analysts' notes
I hold Hold at $107. The point that mattered most came from GPT: at 15 times earnings, today's price needs cloud profit margin near 22% by fiscal 2028, against about 12% in June. That is a real hurdle, but GPT's own numbers show a strong recovery, so the price is not far off its value. Grok and Muse use 18 times earnings and 5.5 times cloud sales. I think those multiples are too generous for a business whose cash flow fell to $11 billion in fiscal 2026 and whose share count just rose by 710 million. Gemini's $5.00 earnings figure assumes almost no cloud margin gain, which looks too harsh. Both camps rest on one unproven assumption each, so I keep the target and the rating.
