Fastenal is winning big accounts and turning 15% sales growth into 20% profit growth. At $52 the stock trades near 37 times my 2027 earnings. That holds up only if growth stays in double digits after the boost from price increases fades. Target $53.52.
Key points
- 15.5% sales growth in the September quarter, the fastest in four years, driven by large-customer wins.
- 37 times my 2027 earnings of $1.42 a share is what $52.02 asks, near the top of the stock's own history.
- 2.4 points of that growth came from price increases, and that boost is now fading.
The call
The price assumes double-digit growth well into 2028. At about 37 times 2027 earnings, investors are paying for Fastenal to keep taking share from other distributors while operating margins climb past 21%. The stock has gained 22% in 12 months, beating the S&P 500 by 5 points.

I think growth slows to about 9% next year, and the multiple stays where it is. Price increases from 2025 are now in last year's numbers, September growth of 14.4% was the slowest month of the quarter, and bigger customers pay lower margins. Share gains and staffing discipline keep earnings rising, so I see no reason to sell.
Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| 2026 sales, my estimate | $9.3 billion |
| 2027 sales, up 9% | $10.2 billion |
| 2027 operating margin | 21.3% |
| Forward earnings by October 2027 | $1.53 a share |
| Multiple | 35 times |
| 12-month target | $53.52 |
I use 35 times, a little below today's multiple, because growth slows from 15% to under 10%. Each 3 turns of multiple moves the target by about $4.60, so the risk and the reward are roughly even. With a 2.4% dividend on top, that is a hold.

Risks
- Industrial demand rolls over: the factory new-orders survey is at 55, and a drop below 50 would hit sales to producers, nearly 40% of the business.
- Margin squeeze: lower-priced big accounts plus fuel costs could cut gross margin below 44%, which would show up in the December quarter.
- Upside I could miss: if monthly sales releases keep growth above 13% into early 2027, the market may pay 40 times, about $61.
What would change my mind
Monthly sales growth staying above 13% through February 2027 with gross margin holding at 45% would move me to a buy, and growth below 8% would move me to a sell.
On the other analysts' notes
I'm holding my rating at hold with a $53.52 target. The point that mattered most came from Gemini and Muse. They want a multiple of 30 to 31 times earnings, against my 35. Their 2027 earnings estimates of $1.41 to $1.43 a share are almost the same as my $1.42, so our whole disagreement is about that multiple. I don't accept it, for two reasons. First, Fastenal has traded well above 30 times earnings through slow-growth years, including 2023 and 2024, when sales grew in the low single digits. Second, neither of them names an event within twelve months that would force the multiple down. The one event that could do it is industrial demand rolling over, and the factory new-orders survey is still at 55, where anything above 50 means expansion. A sell on the multiple alone, with no catalyst, is the costly mistake of betting against a business that is still compounding. GPT's point that receivables (money customers owe) are growing faster than sales is worth watching, and I will track collection times. But it doesn't change my 2027 earnings yet. GPT and Grok land within a dollar of my target, which tells me the hold case is sound. It is not a reason to move.
