The ADS at $93.89 already pays about 14 times 2026 earnings. My 2027 numbers are close to that, so the stock should track the market over the next year.
Key points
- $46bn 2026 banking net interest income is the raised floor, not a growth story from here.
- 17% return on tangible equity is the target that sets earnings near $22bn attributable.
- 1.7 times tangible book is what $93.89 pays today; 13.8 times 2027 earnings gives $94.
The call
The price requires about $6.80 of 2027 attributable earnings per ADS at a mid-teens multiple, and it already capitalises a 17% return on tangible equity. That is not cheap for a bank whose net interest income guidance is a floor.
I expect $6.83 of 2027 ADS earnings and a 13.8 times multiple, so $94. Wealth inflows and buybacks help, but Hong Kong property charges, short-term wholesale deposits and a 50% payout cap the re-rating.

Valuation
| Item | Figure |
|---|
| 2026 attributable earnings | $21.8 billion |
| 2026 ADS EPS | $6.43 |
| 2027 attributable earnings | $22.6 billion |
| 2027 ADS EPS | $6.83 |
| Multiple | 13.8 times |
| 12-month target | $94 |
A 13.8 times multiple fits a 17% return bank with 5% medium-term revenue growth and a 4% dividend. Upside and downside are both single digits if the 2026 print is clean, which is why the rating is hold.
What $93.89 requires versus my 2027 view- Price requires
- My estimate
ADS figures; earnings are attributable, book is parent tangible
Risks
- Hong Kong commercial real estate charges rise above the 45 basis-point credit-loss guide; watch stage-2 migration in the October 27 release.
- Large short-term CIB deposits leave, cutting net interest income below $46bn; watch quarter-end deposit mix.
- Legal provisions (Herald $1.1bn and others) jump; watch the contingent-liability note.
What would change my mind
A 2026 RoTE well above 17% with credit losses under 40 basis points would justify a higher multiple.
