At $163.50, Emerson costs about 23 times my fiscal 2027 earnings of $7.20 a share, after rising 20% in three months. Growth from power and chip testing looks real, but the price already pays for it. My target is $168.85, a hold.
Key points
- 20%: the stock's gain over three months, 17 points ahead of the S&P 500, as orders grew 7% in the June quarter.
- 23 times: the price against my fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings of $7.20 a share, which is near the top of Emerson's history.
- $10.9 billion: net debt once short-term borrowings are counted, so there is little room for big buybacks to lift earnings.
The call
The price needs roughly 10% earnings growth a year and a multiple that stays in the low 20s. At $163.50, fiscal 2028 earnings must reach about $7.80 a share at 21 times. That is close to my estimate, so the stock already counts on an upcycle that continues.

I think Emerson delivers that growth but not much more. Power plant controls, chip-testing orders (up 70%) and software growing near 10% are real. Still, Europe and Chinese chemicals are weak, the Middle East is still disrupted, and software renewals swing from quarter to quarter. Management's long-range framework is 3% to 9% growth, which supports today's multiple and no more.
Valuation
| Step | Figure |
|---|
| Fiscal 2026 adjusted EPS (guided) | $6.55 a share |
| Fiscal 2027 EPS, my estimate (+10%) | $7.20 a share |
| Fiscal 2028 EPS, my estimate (+9%) | $7.85 a share |
| Multiple on fiscal 2028 EPS | 21.5 times |
| 12-month target | $168.85 |
The multiple is 21.5 times, a small step down from today's 23 times on next-year earnings, because growth will be strong but normal for the cycle. The upside is about 3%. Each one-point change in the multiple moves the target by about $8, so the odds are balanced. That makes it a hold.

Risks
- Fiscal 2027 guidance in early November could come in above 10% earnings growth. A strong first-quarter orders figure would be the first sign.
- Chip-testing demand could reverse as fast as it rose. Watch Test & Measurement orders and capital spending by semiconductor companies.
- Software renewal timing could weigh on margins again. Watch whether annual contract value, the yearly value of software subscriptions, keeps growing above 10%.
What would change my mind
If fiscal 2027 guidance points to adjusted EPS above $7.50 a share, with underlying growth above 6%, I would move to a buy.
On the other analysts' notes
I am keeping my hold rating and my $168.85 target. The point that mattered most came from GPT: inventory in June was 14% higher than in September, and June's cash collection was unusually strong. Stock building up ahead of sales is the kind of forensic warning that comes before an earnings miss. It does not move me, for two reasons. Orders grew 7% in the June quarter, and the project pipeline grew 8%, so the extra inventory looks like it is there to fill orders customers have placed, not unsold goods. My target already assumes the multiple slips from 23 to 21.5 times. GPT's $7.89 of fiscal 2028 earnings is close to my $7.85, and its higher target comes from a $15.78 a share "automation premium". I have not added that premium, because Emerson's own long-range plan of 3% to 9% growth does not pay for it. Grok's $162 and Gemini's $168 bracket my number, which tells me our estimates are close and we differ on the multiple. They do not give me a fact I had not weighed. The test comes with fiscal 2027 guidance in early November. Guidance above $7.50 of adjusted earnings a share would make me a buyer, and guidance below $6.90 would move me toward a sell.
