The market is too pessimistic about next year's earnings. Cogentrix and Meta should lift operating profit despite weaker Texas prices, supporting a $183.16 twelve-month target without a higher valuation multiple.
Key points
- $183.16 a share is my October 2027 target, supported by higher operating profit.
- 94% of 2027 generation is sold forward, limiting near-term power-price exposure.
- $700 million in 2027 profit comes from my Cogentrix and Meta estimates, not nuclear expansion.
The call
The market is too pessimistic about next year's earnings. At an unchanged 10.5 times operating profit, today's price requires about $7.3 billion in 2027 adjusted EBITDA, profit before interest, taxes and depreciation with company adjustments. That barely exceeds the 2026 guidance midpoint. Texas weakness explains the discount; acquisition execution can remove it.
Generation is driving profit growth ($ millions)Source: Vistra August 7, 2026 earnings release; ongoing adjusted EBITDA excludes Asset Closure.
I expect growth without a nuclear construction windfall. My 2027 forecast starts at the existing fleet's lower opportunity estimate, then adds Cogentrix and Meta. November's outlook and subsequent acquisition closing should expose that earnings step. The stock's year-long underperformance argues against assuming enthusiasm returns. My weak buy record demands evidence, not a theme.
Valuation
| October 2027 valuation input | Estimate |
|---|
| 2027 ongoing adjusted EBITDA | $8.1 billion |
| Enterprise-value multiple | 10.5 times |
| Total business value | $85.1 billion |
| Net debt and other senior claims | $23.4 billion |
| Forecast diluted common shares | 336.6 million |
| Twelve-month target | $183.16 a share |
The multiple matches today's valuation against the 2026 guidance midpoint, requiring no enthusiasm-driven expansion. Relative to my ordinary merchant-power assumption of nine times, durable contracts and nuclear scarcity justify about $36 a share. My downside scenario reaches $127 versus $227 upside, supporting Buy, not Strong buy.
What 2027 operating profit means for the targetOur scenarios, October 8, 2026; 10.5 times EBITDA, $23.4 billion senior claims, 336.6 million shares.
Risks
- Texas demand could arrive late; watch 2028 forward prices, where protection is weaker.
- Acquisition debt, growth spending and refinancing costs could consume the earnings gain; watch borrowing and shares issued. DOE financing remains conditional.
- Nuclear outages or remediation could depress cash; first-half 2026 cash after all capital spending was only $650 million, unlike management's measure excluding growth.
What would change my mind
I would cut the target if formal 2027 guidance including Cogentrix and Meta falls below $7.8 billion without a temporary, recoverable outage.
