The market is too pessimistic about improving aircraft and shipyard efficiency. My forecast supports earnings growth and a $380.69 twelve-month target without requiring a meaningful increase in the earnings multiple.
Key points
- $19.03 a share is my 2027 earnings forecast, driven by aircraft and shipyard efficiency.
- 20 times earnings supports upside without a higher valuation than today's roughly comparable multiple.
- $1.17 billion of first-half 2026 cash came from increased customer advances, not repeatable profit.
The call
The market is too pessimistic about execution. At my 20-times earnings multiple, today's price requires only $16.49 a share in 2027. That is below management's latest 2026 outlook. On my sales forecast, it means a 9.5% operating margin, the profit retained before interest and taxes.

I expect efficiency gains to outlast the weak stock trend. Orders exceed aircraft deliveries, while shipyard profits are growing faster than revenue. My 2027 forecast assumes gradual improvement, not an immediate submarine-production breakthrough. January's operating plan should test that forecast; advance payments make the recent cash surge a less reliable signal.
Valuation
| My forecast or assumption | Figure |
|---|
| 2027 revenue | $60.0 billion |
| 2027 operating margin | 10.9% |
| 2027 net earnings | $5.22 billion |
| 2027 diluted earnings per share | $19.03 |
| October 2027 earnings multiple | 20 times |
| Twelve-month target, using unrounded earnings | $380.69 |
The target holds up with slower aircraft margin improvementAnalyst scenarios for FY2027 Aerospace operating margin; all other assumptions unchanged, October 8, 2026.
I retain a two-turn premium over an 18-times industrial scenario for the scarce submarine franchise, worth about $38 a share on my forecast.
A stalled-profit case at that lower multiple gives $303.30; faster execution could support $440, making the balance attractive enough for a buy.
My sell-heavy record warns against automatic valuation cuts, although GD's three-month market underperformance remains contrary evidence.
Risks
- Supplier delays or wage inflation could consume productivity gains; watch aircraft completions and shipyard margins each quarter.
- Government funding delays or tighter aircraft-buyer credit could weaken demand; watch funded orders, cancellations and customer deposits.
- The international vehicle contract could require a profit reversal; watch disputed revenue estimates and collections rather than extrapolating advance-funded cash.
What would change my mind
A 2027 operating plan below $18 a share, accompanied by stalled aircraft and shipyard margins, would overturn my recovery thesis.
